Dominick Revi ran for a touchdown and passed for two others, Ethan Varesko scored twice in the pivotal second half and Beth-Center clinched a playoff berth with a 32-22 victory over visiting Waynesburg in the Class 2A Century Conference Friday night.
Revi opened the scoring with one-yard TD plunge that helped Beth-Center (2-3, 2-6) forge a 14-0 lead.
Waynesburg battled back and tied the score at 14-14 at halftime, but Varesko caught a 20-yard TD pass from Revi in the third quarter and bolted three yards for a score early in the fourth quarter that gave Beth-Center a 26-14 lead. Revi then connected with Tyler Berish on a 23-yard scoring pass with 4:08 remaining.
Waynesburg (1-5, 2-7), which needed a win of seven points or more to make the playoffs, rallied form the 14-0 deficit, getting a 54-yard scoring run by Breydon Woods and a one-yard TD plunge by Nathan Kirby with nine seconds left in the first half to make it 14-14.
The Raiders would not score again until 14 seconds were left in the game, on a nine-yard run by Marcus Bolz.
West Greene 31, Mapletown 12
Dalton Lucey caught three touchdown passes, all in the second half, to help west Greene defeat Mapletown 31-12 to win outright the Class A Tri-County South Conference title.
West Greene went 7-0 in the conference and 8-2 overall. The Pioneers won their eighth straight.
Mapletown (4-3, 6-4) had its four-game win streak come to an end.
Lucey caught scoring passes of 59, 5 and 24 yards from Wes Whipkey, who ended the day completing 7 of 17 passes for 134 yards and and three TDs.
West Greene’s Colin Brady rushed for 159 yards on 23 carries, including a 61-yard touchdown run. Corey Wise carried 11 times for 40 yards.
Mapletown’s Landan Stevenson rush 14 times for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also completed two passes for 79 yards and caught five passes for 105 yards.
On a muddy field, these two teams were tied 12-12 at halftime.
Colin Brady opened the scoring by tearing off a 61-yard scoring run. Kevin Henderson missed the extra-point attempt with 9:38 left in the first quarter.
Mapletown tied it about four minutes later after unveiling what some called the muddled huddle. The weird alignment had the center, Brady at times, snap the ball with all the lineman on one side of the football.
Mapletown surprised West Greene when quarterback Max Vanata handed of to Stevenson, who threw to a wide open A.J. Vanata, who reached the two-yard line. Stevenson bulled over from the two on the next play.
West Greene took control of the game after Hunter Hamilton went over on a five-yard run to cap a long drive. A run for the two-point conversion failed, leaving the Pioneers with a 12-6 lead.
Mapletown came right back when Stevenson and Max Vanata connected on a 38-yard touchdown pass.
Trinity 28, Ringgold 7
Trinity ended its season on a winning note, scoring in every quarter and defeating Ringgold 28-7 in a Class 4A Big Eight Conference game at Joe Montana Stadium.
Connor Roberts completed 13 of 25 passes and tossed three touchdowns. The Hillers (2-4, 3-7) also scored on a trick play, a double pass from Jeremy Sikora to Landon Hendrix that covered 25 yards in the second quarter and gave Trinity a 14-7 lead.
Roberts threw TD passes of 22 yards to Steven Stewart, 45 yards to Braydon May and two yards to Sikora.
Landon Oslowski had a five-yard TD run that gave Ringgold (0-6, 3-7) a 7-6 lead in the first quarter but the Trinity defense held the Rams scoreless the rest of the way.
Carmichaels 40, Jefferson-Morgan 6
Trenton Carter was involved in five touchdowns – four rushing and one passing – as Carmichaels crushed Jefferson-Morgan, 40-6, in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game at Parker Field.
Carmichaels (6-1, 8-2) finished the regular season in second place, behind West Greene.
Jefferson-Morgan finished 1-6 in the conference and 1-9 overall.
Carter ran it in from 5, 22, 4 and 7 yards for touchdowns and hit Micheal Stewart with an 11-yard scoring pass, Stewart also scored on a 17-yard run.
Cole Jones completed 12 of 20 passes for 15 yards and three interceptions. Johnny Gilbert rushed for 82 yards on 16 carries and Kurt Fowler caught five passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, the score coming on the final play of the game.
Monessen 14, Avella 6
Monessen clinched a Class A playoff berth with a hard-fought 14-6 victory over Avella in a Tri-County South Conference game.
The Greyhounds (3-4, 4-6), who did not finish last season because of a lack of players, scored touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters and used a stingy defense that stopped several Avella drives deep in Monessen territory.
Freshman Daniel Dozier gave Monessen the lead in the second quarter, scoring on a five-yard run. Dozier scored the ensuing two-point conversion and Monessen led 8-0 with 5:17 left in the first half.
Avella had several scoring chances in the second quarter. The Eagles (1-6, 1-9) turned the ball over on downs inside the Monessen 20-yard line early in the quarter, then lost a fumble after driving inside the Greyhounds’ 40.
The Eagles finally reached the end zone with 1:05 left before halftime when K.J. Rush connected with Noah Markle on a 18-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed and Monessen led 8-6 at the break.
The only scoring in the second half came when Monessen’s Theyvon Burke scored on an 11-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Burke appeared to be stopped on a run up the middle but bounced out of the pack and scooted around right end for the score.
Rush completed eight of 11 passes for 68 yards and led the Eagles’ ground game with 76 yards on 16 carries.
Monessen held a 178-121 edge in rushing yards and 227-189 in total offense.
In other games
Central Catholic defeated Canon-McMillan 54-14 but the Big Macs still gained the final playoff berth in Class 6A. Charleroi defeated Frazier 33-6 in the Class 2A Century Conference and California rolled past Bentworth 65-7 in the Class A Tri-County South Conference. No game details were made available by press time.
