1959 – Bubba Lewis rushes for 233 yards and one touchdown, and Larry Blout scores three TDs as Mapletown High School defeats Jefferson-Morgan, 33-7.
1970 – Wash High snaps an 11-game football losing streak by beating Uniontown, 23-20. Robert Bennett scores the winning touchdown on a two-yard run with 9:34 remaining.
1970 – Jefferson-Morgan overcomes a 14-point first-quarter deficit and defeats defending WPIAL Class B champion German, 26-14. The Rockets’ Jim Culp runs for one touchdown and throws two scoring passes to Brad Monas.
1971 – Don Kasperik’s one-yard touchdown run with less than nine minutes remaining enables Washington & Jefferson to open defense of its Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship with a 13-6 victory at Bethany.
1986 – Washington’s Larry Thompson, running his first cross country race of the season, wins the County Coaches Meet at Mingo Park in a time of 17:07. Thompson wins by 54 seconds. The Prexies’ Sue Schneck wins the girls division in 22:07. The boys team titles go to McGuffey with Trinity winning the girls competition.
1987 – Senior tailback Jerry Caldwell rushes for 245 yards and three touchdowns as Fort Cherry defeats visiting Avonworth 21-13. Caldwell scores on runs of 63, 72 and 61 yards.
1991 – Michelle Fischer becomes Ringgold’s all-time leading goal scorer in girls soccer. Fischer’s goal in the Rams’ 8-0 victory over Carlynton gave her 49 for her career, one more than Julianne Rue.
2011 – The Atlantic Coast Conference extends its northern reach by officially accpeting Pitt and Syracuse, boosting the league’s membership to 14 schools.

1908 – Washington & Jefferson College, in a game against Denison, becomes the first football team to use numbers on its jerseys.
1944 – Steve Stepanian, athletic director, football coach and basketball coach at Charleroi High School, is granted a sabbatical leave of absence. He is replaced as football coach by George Chacko.
1949 – Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates becomes the first NL player to hit 50 home runs in two different seasons.
1958 – Jim Husk’s one-yard touchdown plunge with two seconds remaining gives Waynesburg High School a 13-7 win at Burgettstown. All three touchdowns in the game are scored in the final four minutes.
1959 – Nick Stellavato returns a fumble 44 yards for a touchdown and Trinity defeats defending Western Conference champion Uniontown, 13-0.
1965 – Roberto Clemente singles home Bob Bailey in the bottom of the 10th inning to back Bob Veale’s one-hitter and give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Forbes Field. Veale strikes out 12.
1975 – Harold Ivery catches a 25-yard touchdown pass and Bentworth’s Tim Krutkay blocks a punt out of the end zone for a safety in the third quarter for the eventual game-winning points as Bentworth defeats host Jefferson-Morgan, 8-6, ending the Rockets’ 22-game winning streak.
1980 – Pete Gianfrancesco’s 78-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gives Burgettstown a 7-0 victory over host Beth-Center in the Century Conference opener.
1985 – Erich Hopf of Peters Township wins the boys championship by 23 seconds and Canon-McMillan’s Faith Lamb outraces the field to win the girls title at the County Coaches Cross Country Meet at Mingo Park.
1986 – Trinity’s Basil Martin recovers a teammate’s fumble in the end zone for the game’s only touchdown with less than six minutes remaining, and the Hillers add a late safety to defeat Ringgold 9-0 at College Field. The win is the eighth in a row for Trinity dating back to the 1985 season.
1986 – Mike Sanders rushes for 124 yards on 21 carries, catches two passes for 66 yards and scores three touchdowns as Beth-Center remains undefeated with a 28-0 victory over Washington.
1986 – West Greene, which played the last four football seasons against opponents from West Virginia in the Mason-Dixon Conference, returns to the WPIAL with a bang. Gary Gatrell’s five-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter gives the Pioneers a 13-10 victory over visiting German. West Greene improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Tri-County South Conference.
1987 – The Pittsburgh Pirates retire Ralph Kiner’s uniform No. 4.
2000 – In the Sydney Olympics, the U.S. women’s softball team strands a staggering 20 baserunners in an 11-inning, 2-1 loss to Japan that ends the Americans’ 112-game winning streak. It’s the first loss for the U.S. women since the 1998 world championships.
