Stafford scores late to lead California over Mapletown

CALIFORNIA – California running back Damani Stafford scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with 4:12 left to play in Friday night’s game and the Trojans hung on for a 34-28 victory over Mapletown.

Stafford finished with 208 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries, while quarterback Hunter Assad completed 7 of 13 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown and one interception to lead the Trojans’ offensive attack.

Ethan Fike also had four catches for 83 yards for the Trojans.

The Maples were led by running back Landan Stevenson, who carried the ball 30 times for 261 yards and three touchdowns.

Stevenson’s four-yard touchdown run with 11:54 left to play in the game tied the game before Stafford put California ahead for good.

Connor Vig also had a 22-yard, second-quarter touchdown reception for the Trojans, while Clay Menear returned a third-quarter kick off 76 yards for a Maples score.

Monessen 26, Jefferson-Morgan 0

Dan Dozier scored two rushing touchdowns as Monessen shut out Jefferson-Morgan 26-0 in a Tri-County South Conference game.

Anthony Crews and Omarion Rainey each scored one touchdown apiece for Monessen (2-0, 3-2).

Jefferson-Morgan is 1-1 in the conference and 1-4 overall.

Multiple reports had Jefferson-Morgan kneeling down on offense in the second half in order to save injuries and run the clock.

The quarters in the second half were cut to eight minutes from the usual 12 for the same reasons.

McGuffey 46, Frazier 13

The McGuffey defense forced two first-half turnovers and the Highlanders offense took over from there, punishing Frazier on the ground en route to a 46-13 Century Conference victory.

Ethan Dietrich opened the scoring for the Highlanders with a 36-yard, first-quarter touchdown run two plays after Logan Smith recovered a Frazier quarterback Brayden Boggs fumble.

Eric Donnelly then followed with a two-yard touchdown run for McGuffey before Jeremiah Johnston returned an interception for a 42-yard touchdown and quarterback Phillip McCuen later found pay dirt on a 49-yard run.

The Highlanders rounded out the first-half, in which they rushed for 165 yards, with a safety on a Frazier snap through the back of the end zone and a 37-yard field goal by Dietrich.

McGuffey rounded out its scoring in the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by Donnelly and a 32-yard Kyle Brookman touchdown run.

West Greene 48, Avella 0

West Greene quarterback Wesley Whipkey threw for three first-quarter touchdowns and rushed for another as the Pioneers earned a 48-0 victory over Avella Friday night.

Whipkey opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run and completed touchdowns passes of 30 yards to Dalton Lucey, 25 yards to Hunter Hamilton and 37 yards to Nathan Orndoff to pace West Greene to a 28-0, first-quarter advantage.

The Pioneers, who held the Eagles to just five yards rushing and 55 through the air, rounded out the scoring with touchdown runs of 24 yards by Colin Brady, 21 yards by Corey Wise and six yards by Billy Whitlach.

Whipkey completed 5 of 7 passes for 170 yards, while Brady carried the ball four times for 68 yards and Wise had 54 yards on four receptions.

Carmichaels 42, Bentworth 7

Quarterback Trenton Carter threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns and rushed for another, as Carmichaels defeated Bentworth 42-7 Friday night.

Tyler Richmond handed the Mikes a lead they would not relinquish as he returned a first-quarter punt 62 yards for a touchdown.

Carter then added a 16-yard touchdown run before finding Richmond for an eight-yard scoring strike and Hunter Stewart for a 30-yard touchdown to cap a 28-point first quarter.

Carmichaels’ scoring was closed out with a pair of second-quarter touchdown runs. Cody McCoy scored on an eight-yard run, before Stewart found the end zone from 15 yards out.

Ringgold 42, Uniontown 0

Landon Oslowski scored three touchdowns and kicked six extra points to help Ringgold crush Uniontown, 42-0, in a nonconference game.

Oslowski scored on runs of 8, 7 and 10 yards for the Rams, who moved to 4-2.

Evan Parsons caught a 9-yard scoring pass from Deondre Dotson and Bobby Taylor returned a blocked punt for a score. Maddox Sukel scored in the fourth quarter.

South Fayette 35, Latrobe 7

Landon Lutz threw for two touchdowns and Nate Deanes rushed for 105 yards and scored a touchdown in South Fayette’s 35-7 victory over Latrobe in a nonconference game.

The win moves South Fayete to 5-1 and Latrobe to 2-3.

Lutz hit Connor Harcarik with an 11-yard TD strike and Ryan Kovatch with a 26-yard strike in the second quarter.

Harcarik caught five passes for 53 yards and Kovatch caught three for 50. Logan Yater caught four for 33 yards.

Canon-McMillan 61, Baldwin 7

Canon-McMillan quarterback Mike Evans was nearly perfect, connecting on 8 of 9 passes for 205 yards and four touchdowns, as the Big Macs rolled to a 61-7 victory over visiting Baldwin.

Evans connected with Austin Winkleblech for a 57-yard touchdown, Isaiah King for a 53-yard scoring strike, Owen Carter for a four-yard touchdown pass and Lamont Lyons for a 55-yard score.

Ben Urso also completed 4 of 9 passes for 41 yards and two touchdowns for the Big Macs. He connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Treyvon Mullen and a six-yard scoring strike to Connor Steele.

Lyons led Canon-Mac with four catches for 93 yards, while Ryan Angott carried the ball 10 times for a team-high 60 yards and a six-yard touchdown.

Jake Kasper scored on a 3-yard run and Braiden Africa returned a punt 10 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter for Canon-Mac.

Charleroi 28, Waynesburg 7

Nikko Pelligrini scored two second-half touchdowns to help Charleroi to a 28-6 victory over Waynesburg in a Century Conference game.

Pelligrini scored on runs of three and one yards for the Cougars (1-1, 1-3).

Josh Blatnik also scored on an eight-yard run.

Braydon Woods finally got Waynesburg on the board with a 13-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Burgettstown, Rochester, called off

The Class A Big Seven Conference game between Burgettstown and Rochester was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns. Rochester was awarded a forfeit.
