1954 – Charleroi’s Adam Vlanich pitches a one-hitter and strikes out 17 in a 10-0 victory over Monongahela. The only hit allowed by Vlanich was a clean single by Tony Ianno, Monongahela’s next-to-last batter of the game.

1956 – Monongahela wins its first WPIAL championship in any sport as the Wildcats defeat defending champion Bridgeville 1-0 in the soccer title game. Bob D’Amico heads in a shot for the game’s only goal.

1955 – The Milwaukee Hawks select Duquesne University’s Dick Ricketts with the first pick in the NBA draft.

1963 – Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds triples off Pittsburgh’s Bob Friend for his first major league hit.

1971 – Michel Briere, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first star, dies in Montreal from injuries suffered in a car wreck.

1980 – Bill Robinson hits a game-winning home run in the 10th inning of Chicago Cubs relief ace Bruce Sutter as Pittsburgh wins its rain-delayed home opener 5-4 before 44,088 at Three Rivers Stadium.

1987 – The Pittsburgh Penguins fire head coach Bob Berry after three seasons and an 88-127-25 record.

1993 – Charleroi’s Kate DeiCas sets the meet record in the long jump (16-10 1/2) and places in three other events to win the high scorer award in the Washington County Girls Track Meet at Ringgold.

2011 – Marc Andre Fleury makes 32 saves, Alex Kovalev and Aaron Asham score third-period goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0 in the opening game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
