1959 – Washington & Jefferson announces that it will open the 1959-60 college basketball season with a game against the University of Pennsylvania at the Palestra in Philadelphia.
1974 – Allegheny County’s 11-year domination of the Canon-McMillan Relays ends as Washington holds off Peters Township to win its first title. Wash High’s Steve Hull wins the 220- and 440-yard dashes and Morgan Denson establishes a WHS school record of 40.4 in the 330 intermediate hurdles.
1985 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade relief pitcher Kent Tekulve to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher Al Holland and minor leaguer Frankie Griffin.
1989 – Mapletown’s Derek Bochna goes 4-for-4 and hits for the cycle but Carmichaels defeats the Maples 11-8 in a Section 18-AA baseball game.
1996 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select North Carolina A&T offensive tackle Jamain Stephens with their first-round pick (29th overall) in the NFL draft.
