1947 – Notre Dame quarterback Johnny Lujack wins the Heisman Trophy.
1957 – In the NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers do not have a first-round selection because of trade but select Carmichaels native Larry Krutko, a fullback from West Virginia, with their second-round pick (20th overall).
1970 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade shortstop Fred Patek, pitcher Bruce Dal Canton and catcher Jerry May to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for shortstop Jackie Hernandez, pitcher Bob Johnson and catcher Jim Campanis.
1977 – Steve Douglas sets a school record with 33 rebounds, scores 20 points and is credited with seven assists as Chartiers-Houston High School’s basketball team defeats South Fayette 78-47.
1978 – Roger Raybuck’s shot from the corner as time expires gives Washington & Jefferson a 56-55 victory over Geneva.
1978 – Kevin Clark scores 35 points as Waynesburg College wins its season opener 92-87 at Alderson-Broaddus.
1980 – Jeff Cettin scores 26 points and grabs 30 rebounds as Mapletown defeats Waynesburg, 54-44.
1993 – Washington running back Brian Davis, Beth-Center tight end Frank Hoak, Canon-McMillan offensive lineman Sean Stopperich and Ringgold linebacker Vernon Kirk are named to the Associated Press all-state football first team.
1994 – Brian Davis, a running back from Washington, is named the Observer-Reporter Offensive Player of the Year and Ringgold safety Bob Brice is named Defensive Player of the Year.
1995 – Bentworth’s Maceo Williams scores 30 of his 40 points during the second half as the Bearcats hold off Carmichaels 67-62. Carmichaels’ Justin Voithofer scores a game-high 41 points.
2006 – Jarrett Brown throws a 22-yard touchdown pass in the third overtime and West Virginia knocks down Mike Teel’s two-point conversion pass to preserve a 41-39 victory over Rutgers.
2009 – Pitt erases a 17-point deficit and rallies to beat Duquesne 67-58 in double overtime at the Mellon Arena. Duquesne’s Bill Clark scores a game-high 23 points.
2012 – Washington’s Shai McKenzie, who rushed for 2,689 yards and 41 touchdowns, is named the Observer-Reporter Football Player of the Year.
2012 – Sean Suisham kicks a 42-yard field goal as time expires, giving the Pittsburgh Steelers a 23-20 win over the host Baltimore Ravens.
