1942 – The PIAA, the governing body of high school sports in Pennsylvania, bans games on Sundays by a 331-42 vote.
1962 – Waynesburg High School, with four individual champions, wins the team title at the Chartiers-Houston wrestling tournament. The Raiders’ champions were Craig McClure (95 pounds), Mickey Boudreau (112), Bob Shriver (133) and Mike George (heavyweight).
1973 – Guard Bill Feyche and center Pete Elish each score 26 points as Canon-McMillan defeats host Washington 77-71 in the championship game of the second Washington Christmas Basketball Tournament.
1974 – Franco Harris rushes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, and Pittsburgh’s defense scores 21 fourth-quarter points as the Steelers rally to defeat the host Oakland Raiders 24-13 in the AFC Championship game.
1978 – Duqeusne’s B.B. Flenory scores 41 points as the Dukes beat Marshall 88-83 in the first round of the West Virginia Classic in Morgantown.
1990 – Waynesburg’s Dave Thomas decisions Trintity’s Damon Brown 3-1 in the 145-pound bout to highlight the finals of the California Christmas Wrestling Tournament. Trinity, with champion Jon Truby (130), has eight place-winners to top the local teams.
1999 – Eric Lang of Peters Township scores 40 points as the Indians edge Boardman (Ohio) 90-83 in the Blue Devils Classic at Mt. Lebanon.
2006 – Texas Tech spots Minnesota a 31-point, third-quarter lead, then rallies for a stunning 44-41 overtime victory in the Insight Bowl, the largest comeback in Division I-A bowl history.
2009 – De’Sean Butler’s 20-foot jump shot with two seconds left gives West Virginia a 63-62 victory over Marquette in the Big East Conference opener.
2017 – Jordan Swart makes a driving 15-foot leaner as time expires to give Washington a 46-45 victory over Upper St. Clair in the Peters Township Holiday Tournament.
