1953 – Washington High School wins its second straight Section 4 basketball title by defeating Canonsburg 84-63 behind 30 points from Dave Henderson.
1956 – McDonald becomes the first area team to clinch a basketball section title, winning Section 23 with a 75-47 victory over Midway. Milt Powell scores 31 points for McDonald.
1961 – Terry Holder scores 25 points and Fort Cherry remains undefeated in Section 15 by holding off Snowden 56-54.
1967 – Fort Cherry becomes the first local team of the season to win a basketball section championship. The Rangers clinch the Section 11 title with a 90-75 victory over McGuffey behind 27 points from Jerry Thornton and 25 from Mike Zyra.
1969 – LSU’s Pete Maravich scores 66 points in a 110-94 loss to Tulane.
1970 – Avella’s basketball team moves into first place in Section 12-B by defeating Burgettstown 59-49 on the Eagles’ home court. Dave Minda scores 11 points to lead Avella.
1971 – Francis Mullens scores 31 points and sets a Fort Cherry school record with 32 rebounds to help the Rangers to a 90-52 victory over Avella in Section 12-B.
1976 – Sophomore Rich Strope wins the heavyweight bout with a third-period fall to secure the Prexies’ 24-17 victory over Trinity and give the Prexies their first undefeated (14-0) wrestling season since 1948-49. Wash High’s winning streak is extended to 22 consecutive dual meets.
1980 – Doug Arnold scores a game-high 25 points to give Duquesne a 67-66 victory over Pitt before 15,728, the largest crowd to watch the Dukes play at the Civic Arena.
1982 – Trinity and host Canon-McMillan wrestle to a 23-23 tie, leaving a berth in the WPIAL Team Tournament in limbo. Both the Hillers and Big Macs are tied with 6-1-1 records.
1988 – Waynesburg College (24-1) extends its winning streak to 24 straight with an 81-63 victory at Westminster. Rob Montgomery scores a game-high 29 points for the Yellow Jackets.
1989 – Matt Jennings scores 21 points, Mike Maloy has 15 and Immaculate Conception rallies to beat Chartiers-Houston 65-52 to win the Section 15-AA-A title, the Comets’ first outright section title in nine years.
2006 – Burgettstown clinches the Section 5-AA boys basketball championship by winning a low-scoring 39-25 game against Fort Cherry. Brenden Bongiorni scores a game-high 14 points for the Blue Devils.
2007 – Alex Ruoff scores 18 points and West Virginia upsets No. 2 UCLA, 70-65.
2007 – Jaromir Jagr has three assists in the New York Rangers’ 5-2 win over Washington and becomes the 12th player in NHL history to score 1,500 points.
2012 – Canon-McMillan’s wrestling team defeats arch-nemesis Central Dauphin 28-25 in the PIAA Class AAA Team Tournament semifinals in Hershey, snapping the Rams’ state-record 95-match winning streak.
