A new name tops the leaderboard this week: Allegheny junior shooter Colby Pecorella fired a 298, along with Riley Dunn of Frazier-Simplex and Dean Trew of Dormont-Mt. Lebanon, to share high individual this week. Pecorella and Dunn were the high juniors with 298, and Dunn was high woman. Murrysville’s Ray Harvey was high senior with 294. Frazier had the high team score of the week with 1,475.

1943 – Guard Bob Sprowls scores 12 points to lead Claysville to a 34-29 victory over Section 15 champion East Bethlehem in a WPIAL Class B basketball playoff game at Wash High.
1956 – McDonald High School gets 26 points from Milt Powell and advances to the WPIAL Class B playoffs with a 63-55 victory over Centerville in a game played in Donora.
1961 – Ned Twyman scores 31 points and unranked Duquesne upsets No. 2-ranked St. Bonaventure 79-74 in overtime.
1971 – Mark Taylor and Fred Sams of Washington’s Section 12-B championship team receive the most votes for the Observer-Reporter’s All-District Boys Basketball team.
1973 – Ulice Payne scores 18 points as Ringgold rolls to a 66-39 victory over Valley in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals at the Civic Arena. Scott Nedrow scores 16 points and Joe Montana has 14 for the Rams.
1975 – Though it has only two individual champions, West Greene ends Waynesburg’s 18-year run as Section 11-B wrestling champion at the section tournament. The Pioneers’ winners are Jim Browell (91 pounds) and Curt Hughes (132).
1981 – Washington County schools sweep the titles in the WPIAL wrestling team tournament finals. Chartiers-Houston beats Mt. Lebanon 30-22 in Class AAA. The Bucs get the clincher when 185-pounder Frank Vulcano pins Jim Andrianosin in 1:32. Washington edges Waynesburg 27-24 for the Class AA championship when heavyweight Orlando Williams pins the Raiders’ Mark Moore.
1986 – The Washington boys overcome an eight-point second-quarter deficit and blitz Rochester in the second half for a 75-55 victory in the WPIAL Class AA quarterfinals at the CCBC Dome. Sean McKenzie makes 12 of 15 shots and scores 25 points for Wash High (22-1).
1988 – Kerry Marisa scores 25 points and Waynesburg defeats Blackhawk 77-70 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs. Blackhawk had been to the WPIAL finals each of the last two seasons.
1994 – NBA referee Steve Javie ejects Portland radio analyst Mike Rice in the third quarter of the Pacers’ 106-94 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.
1995 – Laura Marquis’ basket at the buzzer off an inbounds pass gives visiting Waynesburg College a 68-66 victory over Salisbury State in the first round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament. Laura Baker-Kerr scores 27 points for the Yellow Jackets.
