1948 – Middleweight boxer Lee Sala of Donora dominates Vinnie Rossano before 3,705 fans at the Duquesne Gardens for his 34th consecutive victory and first in Pennsylvania.

1951 – PONY Baseball, an organization that oversees baseball for 13- and 14-year-olds, is formed during a meeting of Washington’s Welfare and Recreation Committee. Lew Hays, sports editor of The Reporter, is elected the league’s temporary chairman.

1966 – Tom Patterson (112 pounds) and heavyweight George Ramsey each win bouts via pin for Chartiers-Houston as the Bucs end Trinity’s 21-match wrestling winning streak, 28-19.

1968 – Ken Griffey scores 22 points and Malcolm Lomax has 16 as Donora High School stays undefeated with a 71-51 win over Belle Vernon. The Dragons improve their winning streak to 11 games.

1969 – New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath “guarantees” a victory before the game against the 17-point favorite Baltimore Colts, then leads the AFL to its first Super Bowl victory, a 16-7 triumph over a Baltimore team that had lost only once in 16 games all season.

1975 – The Pittsburgh Steelers shut down Minnesota’s offense, handing the Vikings their third Super Bowl defeat, 16-6. Franco Harris, the game’s MVP, sets a Super Bowl rushing record with 158 yards.

1976 – Adrian Dantley makes 13 of his 15 shots and scores 34 points to lead 13th-ranked Notre Dame to a 77-66 victory over Pitt before 5,520 at the Civic Arena.

1984 – Quarterback Cliff Stoudt, who had limited success in 1983 with the Pittsburgh Steelers as Terry Bradshaw’s replacement, signs a three-year, $1.2 million deal with the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions.

1985 – Waynesburg College’s Paul Stanley scores 38 points, making 16 of 22 shots, as the Yellow Jackets win at Westminster, 86-74.

1987 – Burgettstown High School’s Jamie O’Donnell scores 40 points as the Blue Devils defeat South Fayette 60-42 in a Section 17-AA-A girls basketball game.

1988 – Willie Stargell, the longtime Pittsburgh Pirates slugger who struck a formidable pose at the plate and in the clubhouse, gains admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Stargell hit 475 home runs in 21 years for the Pirates before he retired after the 1982 season.

1988 – A proposed national championship football playoff is rejected by a 98-13 vote of the nation’s major college football schools.

1994 – J.R. Wagner scores 18 points as Charleroi edges Frazier 65-63, the 100th career victory for Cougars coach Mickey Hornack.

1996 – Kevin Frantz scores 23 points and Burgettstown shoots 67 percent from the field to remain undefeated in Section 5-AA-A with a 77-54 win over visiting Washington.

1999 – Washington wide receiver Diontae Walker and Charleroi tight end Dan LaCarte are named to the Associated Press Small School All-State Football first team.

2012 – Beka Bellhy scores 25 points, including her 1,000th career point, to lead Fort Cherry’s undefeated girls basketball team to an 81-11 win over Mapletown.
