1947 – Hank Greenberg, who led the American League with 44 home runs and 127 RBI in 1946 after spending the previous four and a half years in the military, is sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates for $75,000 by the Detroit Tigers.
1961 – The Pittsburgh franchise pulls out of the National Basketball Association after a stay of less than 24 hours. In announcing his club’s withdrawl, franchise owner John Harris says he’s sure he can “find some other way to invest a quarter of a million dollars in something without so many headaches.” One day earlier, the NBA awarded expansion franchises to Chicago and Pittsburgh.
1976 – Pittsburgh wins the Super Bowl for the second straight year. Terry Bradshaw’s 64-yard touchdown pass to Lynn Swann and Glen Edwards’ interception on the last play of the game give the Steelers a 21-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Swann, with four receptions for 161 yards, is the game’s MVP.
1982 – Mon Valley Catholic High School graduate Joe Ravasio is named the school’s head football coach, succeeding Tony Barchetti. Ravasio was an assistant for seven years at Chartiers-Houston and one at his alma mater.
1989 – Waynesburg’s wrestling team defeats Trinity 31-14 to end an eight-year losing streak against the Hillers. The Raiders also extend the WPIAL’s longest active dual-meet winning streak to 13 consecutive matches.
1998 – Senior forward Karen Donley becomes the third girls basketball player in Trinity history to score 1,000 career points when she totals 21 in the Hillers’ 66-61 victory over Bethel Park.
2010 – Katie Rosemeier scores 16 points, including her 1,000th career point, to help Chartiers-Houston to a 52-46 win over Avella.
