1891 – The International YMCA in Springfield, Mass. is the site of the first official basketball game. Peach baskets were used, but it wasn’t until 1905 that someone removed the baskets’ bottoms.

1959 – Bill Snodgrass (133 pounds) and Robb Bartholomew (145) each won by fall as Waynesburg High School’s wrestlers defeat Trinity 27-17 for the Raiders’ 38th consecutive dual meet victory.

1961 – Washington’s John Cunningham wins a 3-1 decision in the heavyweight bout to give the Little Prexies’ wrestling team a 26-22 victory over Canon-McMillan, which keeps Wash High undefeated.

1966 – Bill Austin, line coach of the Los Angeles Rams, is hired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Austin replaces Burgettstown native Mike Nixon, who was fired after a 2-12 season.

1975 – The PIAA announces that because of a $1 parking fee at the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg, the organization has decided to move its basketball and wrestling championships to Herhsey and State College, respectively.

1980 – Terry Bradshaw passes for 309 yards and sets two passing records to help the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Los Angeles Rams, 31-19, and become the first team to win four Super Bowls.

1982 – Leon Lewis and Larry Washington each score 13 points as Waynesburg College defeats visiting Ohio Valley 60-53, giving Yellow Jackets coach Rudy Marisa his 400th career victory.

1985 – Joe Montana passes for a Super Bowl record 331 yards and three touchdowns to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a 38-16 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Roger Craig scores a Super Bowl record three touchdowns.

1987 – Mario Bongiorni scores 25 points and John Gabrielli has 21 as Burgettstown remains undefeated in Section 17-AA-A with a 72-71 victory over host Fort Cherry before a standing-room-only crowd.

1989 – Lance McIntire’s layup with 27 seconds remaining in overtime gives Waynesburg a 66-65 victory over host Washington and moves the Raiders into a tie for first place in Section 9-AAA.

1998 – The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators play to a 0-0 tie at the Civic Arena.

1998 – Tim Polosky scores 17 points as Mapletown upsets Monessen, the fifth-ranked team in Class A, 45-37.
