1954 – Running back Elmo Natali of California State Teachers College is selected in the 10th round of the NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns.

1957 – Ollie Payne scores 11 points and Charleroi High School ends Monessen’s 38-game section winning streak by defeating the Greyhounds 37-29. The contest draws a crowd of 3,444, the largest to see a basketball game at Monessen.

1954 – John Beatty scores 25 points, including a game-winning basket with five seconds left, as Charleroi edges Monessen 44-42.

1963 – Rick Sonneborn of West Greene High School scores 45 points but the Pioneers lose to Carmichaels 80-65 in a Section 18-B game.

1973 – George Foreman knocks out Joe Frazier in the second round in Kingston, Jamaica, to win the world heavyweight boxing title. Foreman knocks down Frazier six times.

1975 – The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Syl Apps is named MVP at the NHL All-Star Game in Montreal after scoring two goals.

1989 – Joe Montana drives the San Francisco 49ers 92 yards in 11 plays and throws a game-winning touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds left to beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 20-16, in the Super Bowl.

1991 – Brian Miller sets Ringgold’s single-game scoring record with 39 points in the Rams’ 75-53 victory over visiting Latrobe.

2006 – The Pittsburgh Steelers are the first team since the 1985 Patriots to win three postseason road games, thanks to a 34-17 dismantling of the Denver Broncos in the AFC title game.

2011 – B.J. Monteiro has 20 points and six rebounds to lead Duquesne to an 83-67 win over Charlotte, improving the Dukes’ Atlantic 10 Conference record to 5-0.

1959 – Meade McKee’s 45 points power McDonald High School to an 89-53 win over East Washington. McKee makes 19 field goals.

1967 – Donora native Stan Musial is named general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.

1975 – By the slimmest of margins, Ralph Kiner is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his 15th and final year of eligibility. The former Pittsburgh Pirates slugger, who played only 10 years in the majors and led the National League in home runs for seven consecutive seasons, received 273 votes, just enough to reached the 75 percent needed to be elected.

1984 – Paul Stanley scores 22 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as Waynesburg College edges visiting Point Park, 69-67, in double overtime at College Gym to take sole possession of first place in NAIA District 18. Waynesburg wins despite having only four players score.

1986 – Bridget Lied’s 12-foot jumper with four seconds left gives Peters Township a 43-42 victory over visiting Waynesburg. It’s the Raiders’ first loss of the season. Peters Township, which receives 23 points from Vicki Humphreys, overcomes a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit.

1996 – P.J. Wrigley and Eric Lange make consecutive baskets late in the third overtime to help host Charleroi to a 79-75 victory over Carmichaels, which entered the game as the top-ranked Class A team in the state. Justin Voithofer makes eight three-pointers and scores 47 points for the Mikes.

1997 – Jackie Matheny scores 30 points, makes 15 of 18 free throws, grabs 11 rebounds and has seven steals as West Greene defeats Monessen 55-53 for the Pioneers’ first girls basketball win ever over the Greyhounds.

2011 – The Pittsburgh Steelers advance to their third Super Bowl in six years with a 24-19 victory over the New York Jets. William Gay returns a fumble 19 yards for a touchdown, helping the Steelers build a 21-point first-half lead.
