1957 – Penn State’s baseball team edges Notre Dame 5-4 to win a berth in the finals of the College World Series in Omaha. Neb.
1981 – Following Seattle’s 8-2 win over Baltimore, major league players go on strike.
1987 – Paula Sculimbrene hits a home run – the first ever at Doc Norcross Stadium in Shippensburg during a high school playoff game – and Chartiers-Houston defeats Linesville 6-2 in the PIAA Class AA softball semifinals.
1998 – Washington becomes the first team from the Washington-Greene County area to win a PIAA baseball championship, defeating Wyalussing, 13-3, in five innings in Harrisburg. Joe Gregula drives in four runs.
1998 – Carmichaels caps a 26-0 season by rallying for a 5-2 victory over South Williamsport in the PIAA Class A softball championship game in Shippensburg. Megan Bandish drives in the game-tying run and scores the go-ahead run on an error.
2001 – With his team having the worst record in the National League at 19-41 and well on its way to a ninth consecutive losing season under his watch, Cam Bonifay is fired as senior vice president and general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Roy Smith, a former major league pitcher and assistant to Bonifay, is named interim general manager.
2002 – Ed Olczyk, a 36-year-old former NHL player and broadcaster, is hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins to be their new coach, replacing the fired Rick Kehoe.
2002 – Dan Pallante resigns as athletic director and head football coach at Canon-McMillan High School. Pallante had a 20-19 record in four seasons with the Big Macs.
2003 – In one of the most unusual major league games, six Houston pitchers combine to no-hit the New York Yankees, 8-0. After starter Roy Oswalt leaves with an injury, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner hold the Yankees hitless at home for the first time since 1952.
2012 – Jim Rider, a graduate of Peters Township High School and draft pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates, drives in the winning run with a shallow pop fly that landed just inside the left-field foul line in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Kent State to a 3-2 win over Oregon and sending the Golden Flashes to their first College World Series.
June 12
1964 – The Meadows draws a record crowd of 9,462, including golf legend Arnold Palmer, for opening night in its second year. The total purse for the nine-race card is $29,375.
1968 – Jeff Cree pitches a two-hit shutout as Waynesburg defeats Kiski, 3-0, at Forbes Field to advance to the WPIAL baseball championship game against Ellwood City.
1970 – Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches a 2-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader against the host San Diego Padres. Ellis walks eight and hits a batter, and Willie Stargell hit two homers.
1980 – Mike Easler hits for the cycle – he homers off Doug Bair in his final at-bat – and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 10-6, at Riverfront Stadium.
1990 – Bob Johnson is hired as head coach and Scotty Bowman is named director of development and recruitment by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
1995 – Ron Faust, head basketball coach at Washington High School, is hired as the Prexies’ athletic director, replacing Bob Wagner, who retired after 27 years as the school’s athletic director.
2009 – Pittsburgh’s Max Talbot scores two second-period goals as the Penguins beat the defending champion Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in Game 7 and win the Stanley Cup at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena. Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, the playoff scoring leader with 36 points, earns the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP.
HOLE-IN-ONE
Ralph Troiano of Washington had a hole-in-one Monday at Butler’s Golf Course in Elizabeth. Troiano aced the 96-yard No. 13 hole by using a pitching wedge. His playing partners were Pat O’Hara, Stan Walters and Bob Kaufman.
VOLLEYBALL CAMP
The Washington & Jefferson women’s volleyball program will host a camp Sunday, June 26th. There will be two sessions to the camp. The first, from 9 a.m. until noon, is for athletes entering grades 7 through 9. The second session, which runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., is for athletes entering grades 10 through 12.
Cost of the camp is $40 per session. The camp includes on-court sessions with Presidents head coach Lindsey Llewellyn, her staff, and current W&J volleyball players, aloong with a Q&A session about the college volleyball experience
