Cal’s Franklin earns regional award

After a dominating outdoor season, California University senior Divonne Franklin was named the Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Franklin received the regional honor for the second time this year as she accomplished the feat following the indoor campaign. She became the first athlete in Cal history to win the award multiple times in a career.

A native of Philadelphia, Franklin broke a pair of long-standing meet records while winning three titles at the PSAC Championships last month. She repeated as the league champion in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, plus helped the 1,600-meter relay team win the conference title. Franklin broke the championship record in the 200 meters that had stood since 1984. She eclipsed the meet record in the 100, which also stood for more than 35 years.

Franklin competed in both the 100 and 200 meters at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago. She earned second-team All-America honors in the 100 by placing 10th in the preliminaries with a time of 11.62 seconds. Franklin registered a time of 23.99 seconds to place 14th in the preliminaries of the 200.
