” There are six fellows of which Heisey is one.
Instead of the students thinking about researching an idea and saying someone should do this, we wanted the class question to be what can we do. We wanted the question to be what can we do physically on this campus to address the problem of plastic waste.

Students wanted it to be a two-semester course to work more and refining and selling.
“What they found out is this is a possibility. We really want to see how far this can go.

As part of one of Heisey’s classes during the recently completed school year a challenge was issued to the students – could they take waste plastic and create something that promotes social change.
“I’d love to eventually have a small recycling program, because there’s nothing in Greene County right now,” he said. “Thien I’d like to hire people to process the plastic, shred it, then have artisans who take that plastic and make it into a variety of things and then market that.”
“We’ll eventually be able to get on there and sell some of the things we’re making,” Heisey said.

One story idea for you – a faculty member in the Department of Fine Arts is working on a “ Plastics Project” in which he and students turn recyclables into bowls, pens, etc. in an effort to reduce waste. The items are then sold in WU’s on-campus store. He is aiming to grow the program and acquire the equipment necessary to create larger projects as well, such as benches.
