1945 – Roscoe Ross scores 15 points to lead Donora to a 53-38 victory over Beaver Falls to win the WPIAL Class A basketball championship at McKeesport Vocational High School. As champion, Donora receives a first-round bye in the state tournament.
1956 – Trinity repeats as the team champion and eight wrestlers from Washington and Greene counties win individual titles at the WPIAL tournament held at Washington High School. Jim Grimes (95 pounds), Ralph Littleberry (127) and Veryl Long (145) win titles for the Hillers.
1958 The Bethlehem Joint Bulldogs (23-1) get 18 points from Adam Popielarczyk and defeat McDonald 68-51 in the WPIAL Class B basketball semifinals at the Pitt Field House. Meade McKee scores 16 points for McDonald (22-4).
1979 — Chartiers-Houston’s Brian Kesneck (155 pounds) and Canon-McMillan’s Darrell Patterson (185) win titles at the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Championships.
1980 – In one of the lowest-scoring NIT games in more than two decades, St. Peter’s defeats Duquesne, 34-33, in the quarterfinals at the Civic Arena.
1981 – Freshman Mark Doppelheuer makes a driving six-footer with four seconds remaining to give Waynesburg College a 59-57 victory over Cedarville (Ohio) in the first round of the NAIA basketball tournament at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City.
1984 – Beth-Center’s Marc Bartolomucci (119 pounds) wins his third consecutive WPIAL Class AA wrestling championship and reaches another milestone, winning his 135th career bout, a WPIAL record.
1989 – Brian Shorter scores 20 points and Pitt makes six straight free throws down the stretch to beat Villanova 71-66 in the Big East tournament quarterfinals.
1992 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade pitcher Neal Heaton to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Kirk Gibson.
1993 – Former California State College quarterback Chuck Colborn is hired as head football coach at Ringgold.
1995 – Gary McCullough scores 21 points and Peters Township uses an 11-0 run in the second quarter to win its first game in the PIAA Class AAA basketball tournament, 85-66 over St. Mary’s, at Clarion University.
2000 – Playing in its first PIAA basketball postseason game, Jefferson-Morgan defeats Forbes Road, 65-47, in the first round of the Class A playoffs at Monessen High School. The Wilson trio of Tyrone, Calvin and Damon combine for 49 points and 34 rebounds for the Rockets.
2001 – McGuffey’s Jeff Breese decisions Belle Vernon’s Aaron Olszewski 10-2 to win the PIAA Class AAA 112-pound wrestling title. It’s the second state title for Breese.
2007 – Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby, 19, becomes the youngest player in NHL history with two 100-point seasons after scoring a goal in a 3-2 overtime win over the New York Rangers.
