1940 – Sammy Angott of Washington wins a decision over Davey Day before 9,000 fans in Louisville to win the world lightweight boxing championship. The decision from referee Jack Dempsey, the only judge, is in Angott’s favor by the score of six rounds to five with four even. The Associated Press scores the fight nine rounds to six in favor of Angott.

1947 – Hank Day, head football coach at Farrell High School, is re-hired as coach at Washington.

1961 – John Barr’s home run in the top of the 14th inning breaks up a pitchers’ duel and gives the Washington High School baseball team a 4-3 victory over Chartiers. Winning pitcher Larry Rettinger strikes out 11 and walks only one.

1962 – Wash High’s baseball team remains undefeated as Jim Martin throws a no-hitter in a 12-0 victory over Chartiers-Houston. Ted Headley hits a two-run homer and a double.

1965 – Wash High wins the Washington County Coaches Association track meet for the third year in a row. Beth-Center pole vaulter Pete Zaharoff sets the area record by clearing 13-8.

1971 – Fred Sams of Washington becomes the first athlete in the history of the Washington County Coaches Track Meet to win the same event three years in a row. Sams three-peats in the 180-yard low hurdles, winning in 21.0. Sams helps Wash High to its ninth team title in 11 years.

1975 – Jefferson-Morgan dominates the Greene County Track Meet, winning the team title by 22 points over second-place Waynesburg. J-M’s Dennis Garrett sets the meet record in the 200-yard dash with a time of 22.6.?

1976 – Peters Township dethrones three-time defending champion Washington to win the team title at the Washington County Coaches Track Meet. The Indians sweep the top three places in the 2-mile run. The only meet record is set by Ringgold’s Jim Bavuso, who clears 6-4 1/2 in the high jump.

1977 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select Robin Cole, a linebacker from New Mexico, in the first round of the NFL draft.

1977 – The Houston Oilers select offensive lineman George Reihner of Penn State and a former Washington High School player in the second round of the NFL draft.

1979 – The San Francisco 49ers select Notre Dame quarterback Joe Montana in the third round of the NFL draft.

1985 – Bob Prince, fired by the Pittsburgh Pirates 10 years earlier, returns to the broadcast booth for the first time at Three Rivers Stadium for a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the first inning Prince calls, the Pirates score nine runs en route to a 16-2 victory.

2008 – Top-ranked Penn State wins its first NCAA men’s volleyball championship in 14 years, rallying for a 27-30, 33-31, 30-25, 30-23 victory over second-ranked Pepperdine.
