1959 – Washington High School wins the team title at the Washington County Coaches Track Meet held in Canonsburg. Donora’s Ray Shearer wins the javelin, shot put and discus.
1964 – Tom Stock and Norris Vactor set meet records to help Washington to the team title at the Washington County Coaches Association track meet. Stock wins the 440-yard dash in 50.3, and Vactor and Trinity’s Britt Holt each set the mark in the pole vault by clearing 12-4.
1968 – Waynesburg’s Karl King pitches a no-hitter as the Raiders win at Beth-Center 5-0. King strikes out seven and helps his cause with two singles.
1973 – Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, wins the Kentucky Derby with a record time of 1:59.2, beating Sham by 2 1/2 lengths.
1975 – Sprinter Steve Hull wins three events, leading Wash High to its 11th Washington County Coaches Association track championship in 14 years. Hull wins the 100- and 220-yard dashes and sets the meet record in the 400 with a time of 49.9.
1979 – Trinity’s Elaine Sobansky wins both the shot put and discus at the Baldwin Invitational. Sobansky sets meet and stadium records in the shot put with a throw of 47-6 3/4.
1980 – Washington’s Derek Hull wins three individual events — the 120 and 330 hurdles and 220 dash — and runs the anchor leg for the winning mile relay team as the Prexies gain the team title at the County Coaches Track Meet.
1980 – National League president Chub Feeney suspends Pittsburgh’s Bill Madlock for 15 days and fines him $5,000 for shoving his glove in the face of home plate umpire Gerry Crawford.
VOLLEYBALL CAMP
The Waynesburg University women’s volleyball team will hold its annual two-day summer camp for athletes in grades 10, 11, and 12, on June 17 and 18 at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The camp will be run by head coach Emily Grossman, her staff and Yellow Jackets players.
The cost of the camp is $120, which includes five training sessions, a camp T-shirt, lunch, campus tour and a special student-athlete informational panel.
In addition to the camp, the Waynesburg volleyball team is hosting a trio of skills clinics Aug. 5. The two-hour positional training clinics are designed to assist athletes in finetuning their skills before high school tryouts. Each clinic will be limited to 20 athletes to maximize repetitions and instruction.
Cost for each clinic is $30. If you wish to sign up for more than one clinic, contact head coach Emily Grossman at emily.grossman@waynesburg.edu for a multi-session discount. The schedule for the clinics is:
Setting: 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.; Defense: 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.; Attacking: 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
