1955 – Centerville High School’s Robert “Red” Worrell wins the PIAA Class B discus title with a throw of 138-10 1/2 at University Park.
1956 – Pittsburgh’s Dale Long hits a home run off Brooklyn’s Carl Erskine in the fourth inning at Forbes Field. It is the eighth consecutive game in which Long has homered, a major league record.
1969 – Cincinnati’s Lee May becomes the third player in major league history to hit two home runs in three consecutive games, leading the Reds to a 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Crosley Field.
1974 – Lefty Bill Angelo throws a one-hitter and California defeats Canon-McMillan 5-0 in the first round of the WPIAL baseball playoffs. Angelo retires the first 18 Big Macs before Jack Falconi leads off the bottom of the seventh inning with a clean single to left field.
1974 – The Pittsburgh Penguins select Pierre Larouche with the eighth overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft.
1976 – Washington’s Jamie Pattison pitches a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Prexies defeat Carmichaels 5-1 in the WPIAL baseball playoffs in Waynesburg.
1980 – Bob Phillips pitches a four-hitter and drives in a run with a triple as Carmichaels defeats Washington 6-4 in the WPIAL Class AA baseball quarterfinals at California State College.
1982 – Trinity High School’s Becky Gorby and Sherrie MacKinney each win gold medals on the first day of the PIAA Class AAA Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg. Gorby wins the girls shot put with a toss of 40-4 1/2. MacKinney wins the girls javelin title with a personal-best throw of 151-6. The championships move Trinity into first place in the team standings.
1983 – Trinity’s Sherrie MacKinney successfully defends her PIAA Class AAA girls javelin title with a personal-best throw of 157-8. Chartiers-Houston’s Joe Wenger wins the boys Class AA discus championship with a 153-4 effort.
1986 – Sophomore Dave Snatchko pitches out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve Fort Cherry’s 5-4 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals at Charleroi. Outfielder Brad Tokar throws out a J-M baserunner at home plate to complete a double play in the seventh. It’s Fort Cherry’s 18th consecutive win.
2002 – Beth-Center outslugs Chartiers-Houston, 8-5, in the WPIAL Class A softball semifinals at California University.
2011 – South Fayette’s Nicole Hilton wins the girls 3,200-meter run at the PIAA Track & Field Championships.

1986 – Fort Cherry High School scores eight runs over the first two innings and defeats Ford City 8-5 to win the WPIAL Class AA baseball championship at Butler’s Pullman Park.
1991 – Zane Smith throws the Pittsburgh Pirates’ second one-hitter in three days in a 6-0 victory over the host St. Louis Cardinals.
1995 – Dave Stockton shoots 4-under par 32 on the back nine in the final round to finish at 8-under 208 and edge Isao Aoki by one shot and win the Senior Tour’s Quicksilver Classic.
1996 – Houston’s Jeff Bagwell hits two home runs, including an upper-deck shot off Pittsburgh’s Danny Darwin, as the Astros beat the Pirates 7-4. Bagwell joins Willie Stargell as the only players to hit multiple upper-deck homers at Three Rivers Stadium.
1997 – Winning pitcher Nikki Gasti drives in Tara Metcalf and Tiffany Zuspan with a fourth-inning double to give Carmichaels the lead, and the Mikes go on to defeat Burgettstown 8-6 in the WPIAL Class A softball championship game at California University. It’s the first WPIAL championship for any Carmichaels team since the Mikes’ 1962 football squad.
1997 – Washington, which began its postseaosn playing in the preliminary round, completes an improbable run to the WPIAL Class AA baseball championship with a 5-4 win over Canevin at Pullman Park in Butler.
1997 – Carmichaels outslugs Burgettstown 8-6 in the Class AA finals to win its first WPIAL softball championship.
1999 – Waynesburg senior Josh Roscoe wins the Class AA discus at the PIAA Track & Field Championships in Shippensburg. Roscoe’s winning throw is 162-4.
2002 – Phil Kojack pitches eight shutout innings and Adam Rittenhouse drives in two runs as the Canton Coyotes spoil the Washington Wild Things’ debut in the Frontier League, 3-0, before 3,212 at Falconi Field.
