1925 – Lou Gehrig bats for Pee Wee Wanninger in the eighth inning and replaces Wally Pipp at first base to start his streak of 2,130 consecutive games played.

1948 – Donora middleweight boxer Lee Sala improves his record to 39-0 with a second-round TKO over Tony Riccio before a crowd of 3,124 at the Zivic Arena in Millvale.

1954 – Adam Vlanich strikes out 14, Billy Meyer delivers a tiebreaking single in the sixth inning and Charleroi advances to the WPIAL baseball title game with a 3-2 win over Hurst. The Cougars had a 7-0 lead washed out by rain the previous day and the game was replayed from the start.

1965 – Left-hander Bob Veale sets the Pittsburgh single-game record by striking out 16 Philadelphia batters in the Pirates’ 4-0 victory at Forbes Field. Veale throws a five-hitter.

1968 – Trinity High School’s baseball team gets its second consecutive no-hitter as the Hillers’ Jerry Nicastro stops Peters Township 12-0. Nicastro strikes out 10 and walks two.

1973 – Bill Cargo pitches a two-hitter, and Tony Fastuca hits a run-scoring double in the fifth inning, as Peters Township defeats California 1-0 in a WPIAL baseball first-round playoff game.

1978 – Charleroi uses a strong outing by winning pitcher Tim Cunningham and a five-run fifth inning to defeat Elizabeth Forward 8-1 in the WPIAL baseball playoffs at Munhall.

1982 – Tim Cunningham pitches a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Charleroi defeats Burgettstown 6-2 in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals at Chartiers-Houston.

1981 – Pinch-runner Damian DeRienzo scores on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Mon Valley Catholic a 5-4 win over Riverview in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals at West Field in Munhall.

1983 – Steve Tatar pitches a three-hitter and strikes out eight as California defeats Riverview 4-0 in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals at Montour High School.

1992 – The Pittsburgh Penguins sweep the Chicago Blackhawks in four games to win their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship. Ron Francis scores Cup-clinching goal.

1999 – Chartiers-Houston avenges two regular-season losses to Carmichaels by beating the Mikes 2-1 in the WPIAL Class AA softball semifinals.

2009 – Winning pitcher Michelle Massie allows only a third-inning bloop single and Ashley Morran has three hits as Trinity routs Perry 9-0 in the Hillers’ first PIAA softball playoff game in 10 years.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Dr. Ken Sala had a hole-in-one Monday at Nemacolin Country Club. Sala aced the 160-yard No. 16 hole by using a 7-iron. His playing partners were Gary Macioce, Larry DeSantis and David Hvizdos. It is Sala’s third hole-in-one.
