Trinity Hall of Fame
Trinity High School will be inducting nine new members into the Trinity Sports Hall of Fame. The group will be inducted during ceremonies Friday, Nov. 25.
The inductees are Dan Burholder (wrestling), Richard Devore (footbal), Bill Haines (soccer), Alicia Hammond (soccer), Jason Rice (Contributor), Roland Taggart (wrestling), Ralph Littleberry (wrestling), Ashley Morran (softball) and the 2002 Wrestling Team.
Burkholder was a three-time PIAA placewinner and one-time champion. He was a two-time WPIAL champion and three-rime section champion.
Devore was a three-year letterman in football and two-year letterwinner in track. At Boston College, he was named “Most Improved Defensive Player” as a junior. He coached baseball and football at Trinity.
Haines played on the first Trinity soccer team and was captain and MVP as a senior. He was a two-year starter at Pitt and played professional soccer for the Pittsburgh Miners. He coached the first Trinity girls soccer team and made the playoffs that first year.
Hammond and Rachele Ault were the first two girls to play U.S. Cup Soccer. In 1986, Hammond was the first girl to ever play on the Trinity boys team and lettered. She was All-WPIAL in girls soccer in 1987.
Rice led Trinity West to a combined 14 championships across the three grade levels. He has 200-plus wins and no losing seasons.
Taggart was a PIAA, WPIAL and section wrestling champion in 1955. He was instrumental in starting the wrestling program at Streetsboro High School.
Morran hit 9 home runs, had 42 RBI, 42 runs and a slugging percentage of .566 in her last three years at Trinity. She broke the home run record and was named WPIAL Player of the Year. At Point Park, she hit .363 as a four-year starter. She broke the school’s home run record and was named NAIA Honorable Mention All-Amderica for three years.
Littleberry was a PIAA champion and runnerup his last two years at Trinity. He won two WPIAL and section titles.
The 2002 wrestling team had a 16-3 record and won the WPIAL Team Tournament title. The Hillers were the Eastern Area champion and the Midwest Classic champions. The Hillers were PIAA team runner-up.
Sites, time set
The sites and times for the first round of the PIAA soccer playoffs have been set.
Peters Township girls, runner-up in Class 3A, will travel to Erie McDowell for a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday.
In boys Class 1A, Charleroi travels to Karns City for a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday.
College soccer
The Mercyhurst University Lakers captured the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s Men’s Soccer Championship Sunday following a 1-0 victory over Bloomsburg University at the Steph Pettit Stadium in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
It’s Mercyhurst’s first PSAC Men’s Soccer Title since 2016 and fifth overall.
• Second-seeded Franciscan posted a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Bethany in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s soccer championship Saturday night at Trinity Health System Field in Steubenville.
• Top-seeded Westminster scored a 2-0 shutout victory over No. 2 Franciscan in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship title match Saturday night at the UPMC Sports Complete in New Wilmington.
The PAC title is the sixth in program history for Westminster (14-3-2).
College wrestling
The Waynesburg University wrestling team opened the 2022-23 season by traveling to the King’s Invitational. The Yellow Jackets placed 11th in the 11-team field.
Waynesburg was led by senior Harley Constable, who posted a 2-2 record at 141 pounds with one win by pin.
College cross country
Junior Malia Anderson and senior Sydney Urbine both earned first-team all-league honors, as the California University women’s cross country team finished sixth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships on Saturday afternoon.
• California recorded its best finish in nearly a decade at the PSAC championships Saturday, as they placed fourth in the team standings behind four top-25 runners.
