1940 – The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 7-3 in a penalty free game at Forbes Field.

1965 – Joey Archer drops Sugar Ray Robinson in the fourth round and wins an unanimous 10-round decision over the former middleweight champion before 9,023 at the Civic Arena. It’s the last fight for Robinson, who retires with a 173-19-6 record.

1972 – Jim Day’s 47-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Guy Montecalvo’s two-point conversion cap Washington High School’s comeback from a double-digit deficit and the Little Presidents defeat Albert Gallatin 14-12 in a WPIAL Class A football playoff game at Monessen. It’s Wash High’s first playoff game in 20 years.

1973 – Running backs Kevin Martin and Steve Yourchik combine for 215 yards and four touchdowns, and Dennis Garrett returns a fumble 85 yards for a score, as Jefferson-Morgan defeats Western Beaver 35-6 in the WPIAL Class B football championship game at Wash High Stadium.

1979 – Dan Marino throw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass and Fred Jacobs runs for a late score as Pitt defeats West Virginia 24-17 in the final game at old Mountaineer Field. Oliver Luck passes for a TD and runs for another for WVU.

1984 – Kevin Russell completes 27 of 49 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns as California defeats host IUP 31-14 and wins its first PSAC West Division football title since 1968.

1989 – Eric Mosier rushes for 150 yards on 26 carries and Rob Keys scores on three short touchdown runs as Jefferson-Morgan defeats Monaca 41-13 in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs.

1995 – Eugene Woods runs for two touchdowns, Ken Carl throws for one score and passes for another, and undefeated Washington overcomes a 14-point first-half deficit to defeat Aliquippa 27-14 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA football playoffs.

2000 – Bryan Cherry returns a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and Travis Thomas scores twice as Washington defeats Steel Valley 26-18 in the WPIAL Class AA football playoffs at Dormont Stadium.

2000 – Craig Bland catches touchdown passes of nine, 50 and 52 yards from Lee Fritz as Waynesburg scores the game’s final 18 points and defeats North Catholic 32-14 in a WPIAL Class AA playoff game at Canon-McMillan.

2002 – The Atlanta Falcons erase a 17-point deficit but settle for a 35-35 overtime tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. It’s the first tie in the NFL in six years. Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox sets a franchise record by passing for 473 yards.

2006 – Jefferson-Morgan rushes for 412 yards, including 152 on 13 carries by Jarrod Moskola, and the Rockets defeat Duquesne 47-37 in a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal playoff game at Peters Township High School.

2007 – Robert Heller sets Waynesburg University’s single-game rushing record for the second time in three weeks by gaining 312 yards on 40 carries in the Yellow Jackets’ 54-13 win over Westminster. Heller scores on runs of 11, 2, 21, 3 and 2 yards.

2012 – Veronica Latsko scores on a shot from eight yards in the 15th minute as Peters Township’s girls soccer team defeats Seneca Valley 1-0 in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals.

2012 – Washington & Jefferson rolls lover previously undefeated Waynesburg 31-14 to win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference football championship.
