1944 – Jefferson High School wins its 35th consecutive football game, 21-0 over host Waynesburg.
1967 – Undefeated Waynesburg College is ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press small-college football poll behind top-ranked San Diego State. North Dakota State is ranked No. 3.
1981 – California State scores three touchdowns in a 1:19 span of the first quarter and goes on to defeat Indiana 35-16. It’s the Vulcans’ first win over IUP at Adamson Stadium. Cal’s Ken Wysocki rushes for 146 yards on 27 carries.
1983 – Quarterback Jeff Hostetler caps a 90-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run that gives undefeated West Virginia (5-0) a 24-21 victory over visiting Pitt.
1985 – Mike Suwak completes 11 of 14 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns as Washington High School defeats Albert Gallatin, 49-6.
1987 – The NFL continues the regular-season schedule with replacement players while the players’ association strikes. Average attendance is 16,947, down from 57,205 the first week and 59,824 the second week.
1996 – Fort Cherry running back Mike Vernillo rushes for 327 yards on 23 carries and scores four touchdowns as the Rangers win at Cornell, 43-20. Vernillo scores on runs of one, 77, one and 38 yards.
2001 – San Francisco’s Barry Bonds hits his 70th home run and ties Mark McGwire’s record in the Giants’ game at Houston.
2011 – Waynesburg’s Emily Rohanna shoots 79 and successfully defends her WPIAL Division II Girls golf championship at Longue Vue Club in Verona.
