1954 – Harvey Brookins scores on runs of three and eight yards as McDonald High School defeats previously unbeaten and unscored upon Avella, 25-0.
1956 – Fullback Robert (Red) Worrell runs for 250 yards and three touchdowns as undefeated Centerville defeats Jefferson-Morgan 31-14 before a crowd of 4,000, the largest to watch a game a Wildcats home game.
1968 – Bob Beamon of the U.S. wins the gold medal in the long jump at the Mexico City Olympics. Beamon’s leap of 29-2 breaks the world record by nearly two feet.
1968 — John Billetz completes 12 of 16 passes for 265 yards, including TDs of 31, 40 and 21 yards to Jay Donley, and Mapletown remains undefeated with a 39-13 win over visiting Frazier.
1969 – Don Paull throws two touchdowns passes and runs for another score, Don Chappel intercepts two passes and Waynesburg College scores the game’s final four touchdowns in a 28-6 victory over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan.
1973 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade second baseman Dave Cash to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for pitcher Ken Brett.
1974 – Terry Havelka passes for two touchdowns and Burgettstown turns two Fort Cherry turnovers into scores as the Blue Devils defeat the Rangers 23-6 in a showdown of the Black Hills Conference’s top teams.
1985 – Burgettstown scores 14 fourth-quarter points and upsets Washington 21-12 in a Century Conference game at Hill Memorial Stadium. Mario Bongiorni rushes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and passes for a four-yard score to Chris Gobleck with 1:19 to play. The game is halted with 31 seconds to play.
1987 – Gary Danielson throws four touchdown passes, including two to Fort Cherry High School and California University product Perry Kemp, as the Cleveland Browns defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 34-0 in an NFL strike-replacement player game.
1991 – Charleroi’s Darrell Harding rushes for 251 yards on 14 carries and becomes the WPIAL’s career rushing leader during the Cougars’ 54-16 victory over visiting Bentworth. Harding has 4,930 yards, eclipsing the record of 4,793 by Mapletown’s Derek Bochna.
2004 – McGuffey’s Jeff Weiss breaks a 20-year-old course record in winning the Washington County Cross Country Meet at Mingo Park. Weiss covers the 3.1-mile course in 15:38.
2006 – Martin Brodeur turns away 37 shots to become the third goaltender in NHL history with 450 victories as New Jersey edges Pittsburgh, 2-1.
2011 – The Washington Wild Things hire former major league catcher Chris Bando as the Frontier League team’s sixth manager.
