1964 – The Pittsburgh Steelers retire Ernie Stautner’s No. 70, becoming the first jersey number to be retired in team history.

1968 – Joe Caldwell runs for three touchdowns and John Billetz throws two scoring passes as Mapletown High School remains undefeated with a 49-6 victory over West Greene.

1972 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade pitcher Gene Garber to the Kansas City Royals for pitcher Jim Rooker.

1973 – Washington repeats as the WPIAL Class B cross country champion. The Prexies’ Mike Ardeno finishes 9th at the WPIAL Championships and Ray Friend finishes 11th.

1974 – Kevin Martin scores on runs of 11, 12 and 6 yards, and Jefferson-Morgan intercepts the first three passes thrown by German Township, as the Rockets win the Tri-County Conference championship by routing the previously undefeated Uhlans, 34-7.

1979 – Trinity wins its sixth boys soccer section title by defeating Canon-McMillan 7-0 at North Franklin Field. Chub Bedillion scores two goals for the Hillers.

1984 – Team president Paul Martha announces that the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League will fold because of the league’s plan to go to a fall schedule in 1986. The Maulers play only one season in the USFL.

1985 – Jefferson-Morgan scores all its points in the game’s first five minutes and the Rockets’ defense protects the lead for a 9-0 victory over visiting Frazier that gives J-M its first Tri-County South Conference title in 11 years. Dave Gamble’s safety 18 seconds into the game and Tom Evosirch’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Dave Jamison are all the points the Rockets need.

1986 – Brian Hilk’s one-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the first half, and a missed extra-point kick by Elizabeth Forward in the third quarter, leaves visiting Trinity with a 7-6 victory, the Big 10 Conference football championship and a 9-0 record.

1986 – Waynesburg College’s Terrence Ogletree scores on a 15-yard run on a reverse in the first half, and the Yellow Jackets stop Westminster’s two-point conversion attempt with 1:09 remaining, for a 10-9 upset of the Titans, ranked No. 10 in NAIA Division II. It’s Waynesburg’s first win in New Wilmington since 1974.

1989 – Jenny Sento scores with 3:30 left in overtime to give Ringgold a 3-2 win over Hampton in the first round of the WPIAL girls soccer playoffs.

1990 – Peters Township’s Kathy Knabb wins the WPIAL Class AA girls cross country championship at California University.

1996 – Burgettstown’s Chris Havelka rushes for 147 yards, scores three touchdowns and intercepts a pass as the Blue Devils upset Washington 22-17, eliminating the Little Prexies from WPIAL playoff contention.

1999 – Neil Maggi scores two goals, leading Canon-McMillan to a 2-1 victory over Franklin Regional in the Big Macs’ first boys soccer playoff game in school history.

2004 – Brianna Liebold scores two goals and Chartiers-Houston avenges a regular-season loss to Beaver by defeating the Bobcats 2-1 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA girls soccer playoffs.

2005 – Rain washes out the final round of the PIAA Golf Championships at Heritage Hills Resort in York, leaving Burgettstown’s Christian Goetz and Waynesburg’s Rachel Rohanna to share individual titles. Goetz, who shot 72 in the first round, shares the boys championship with Northern Tioga’s T.J. Howe. Rohanna, a freshman, shares the girls title with three others golfers. Each shot 79 in the first round.
