1951 – John Thomas’ two-yard touchdown run with 10:10 remaining in the game gives Donora High School a 12-7 victory over visiting Washington. It’s the first loss of the season for Wash High (7-1-1) and eliminates the Little Presidents from WPIAL Class AA postseason consideration.
1957 – Bob Stuck of Canonsburg High School takes the lead in the final 300 yards and wins the PIAA Cross Country championship at Penn State. Stuck runs the 2 1/8-mile course in 11:10.4. Canonsburg finishes second in the team competition.
1960 – The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Vernon Law edges out Warren Spahn in voting for the National League Cy Young Award.
1977 – The Pittsburgh Penguins acquire tough guy Dave Schultz in a four-player trade with the Los Angeles Kings. The Penguins send Syl Apps to the Kings.
1984 – Canon-McMillan High School retires Doug Kotar’s football jersey No. 22 at halftime of the Big Macs’ game against Trinity.
1988 – The New York Rangers’ David Shaw is suspended for 12 games by the NHL for slashing the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Mario Lemieux.
1989 – Rick Ferrari scores all three goals in Peters Township’s 3-0 victory over Elderton in the WPIAL Class AA boys soccer semifinal.
1990 – Washington, the No.1-ranked Class AA football team in Pennsylvania, completes an undefeated regular season with a 49-0 victory over Burgettstown. Keith Cushenberry catches touchdown passes of 59 and 8 yards from Todd Fleisnner.
1996 – A.J. Pitorino of Hartwick rushes for an NCAA all-divisions record 443 yards on 45 carries in a 42-14 win over Waynesburg.
1996 – Fort Cherry freshman Mike Vernillo rushes for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries as the Rangers defeat visiting California, 22-19, in a WPIAL Class A first-round playoff game. California senior Nathan Peters rushes for 192 yards and two scores on 38 carries. He ends his career with 4,122 yards and 45 scores.
2001 – Chartiers-Houston’s Mike Meili runs for 292 yards on 46 carries and scores six touchdowns as the Bucs defeat West Greene 48-29 in the regular-season finale. Meili scores on runs of 6, 1, 8, 11, 3 and 5 yards.
2007 – Mike Yancich rushes for 125 yards and two touchdowns as Trinity defeats host Mt. Pleasant 43-16 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs.
2012 – Shai McKenzie runs for six touchdowns as Washington routs Shady Side Academy 47-12 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA football playoffs at Cameron Stadium. McKenzie scores on runs of 83, 6, 41, 56, 14 and 28 yards. He finishes the game with 260 rushing yards on 16 carries.
