PT girls advance to finals

The Peters Township girls soccer team scored two goals in the first half and then held off section rival Mt. Lebanon, 2-1, on Monday night in the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals at Gateway High School.

The win advances PT (14-1-3) to the finals Thursday night at Highmark Stadium against top-seeded North Allegheny (19-1). The Tigers defeated Seneca Valley, 3-2, in the other semifinal. The time of the championship match has not been announced by the WPIAL.

The victory also clinched a state tournament berth for PT.

The Indians, who defeated Mt. Lebanon (16-3-1) twice during Section 2 play, took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Bella Spregel after passes from Brooke Opferman and Isabella Guna.

About 10 minutes later, the Indians increased the lead to 2-0 when a shot by Opferman out of a scrum found the net. The goal followed a free kick by Ella Neupaver.

Mt. Lebanon scored in the second half to cut its deficit in half, but the Indians held firm the rest of the way.

Dodgers’ Turner wins Clemente Award

Justin Turner has won Major League Baseball’s Roberto Clemente Award for character, community involvement and philanthropy.

The Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman was to be presented the award before Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night, two years after he was criticized by the commissioner’s office for violating coronavirus protocols by celebrating with teammates following the title-winning Game 6.

Turner, 37, was nominated for the award for the fifth time this year.

The Justin Turner Foundation, funded by Turner and wife Kourtney in 2016, supports homeless veterans, children and families battling diseases and illnesses, also helps youth baseball organizations and holds an annual golf tournament that raised $650,000 this year for The Dream Center and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

In the NHL

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Jamie Drysdale has a torn labrum in his left shoulder, possibly sidelining him for the rest of the season.

Drysdale injured the shoulder during the Ducks’ loss at Vegas last Friday, and he will have surgery soon, the team announced Monday. He is expected to be out for four to six months.

The 20-year-old Drysdale is a promising playmaker chosen sixth overall by Anaheim in the 2020 draft.

Pitt-Virginia time set

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday that Pitt’s Nov. 12 football game at Virginia will kick off at noon and be televised by the ACC Network.

In college football

Jim Harbaugh expects the four suspended Michigan State football players involved in roughing up two members of Michigan’s team to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

“I can’t imagine that this will not result in criminal charges,” the Michigan coach said Monday.

Michigan State coach Mel Tucker said later Monday that it would be irresponsible to respond to Harbaugh’s call for criminal charges because of the ongoing investigation.

“We’re not here to make any excuses for the behaviors Saturday,” Tucker said. “They are unacceptable.”

Harbaugh said defensive back Gemon Green was punched by a Spartans player in the Michigan Stadium tunnel to spark the melee shortly after the fourth-ranked Wolverines beat their in-state rivals on Saturday night, and that teammate Ja’Den McBurrows was attacked when he tried to help.
