Ruben Gordon caught three touchdown passes and scooped up a blocked punt and returned it 20 yards for another score as Washington won at Clairton 48-20 in a non-conference game Friday night.
Wash High (2-0) remains undefeated with a pair of victories over Class A foes. After the first quarter ended tied 6-6, the Prexies were in control the rest of the way, pushing out to 20-12 lead at halftime and then dominating the second half.
Davoun Fuse got Washington off to a 6-0 lead when he returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown.
Gordon put the Prexies in front for good in the second quarter when he caught a 26-yard TD pass from Logan Carlisle. The duo hooked up again, this time for a 14-yard scoring strike, that made it 20-6.
Carlisle, who completed eight of 12 passes for 134 yards, threw his third touchdown to Gordon, this one covering 20 yards in the third quarter that made the score 27-12.
Gordon’s blocked punt return made it 34-12 in the fourth quarter. After a touchdown by Clairton (0-2), Wash High’s Eddie Lewis and Zach Welsh closed the scoring. Lewis rambled 10 yards for a TD and Welsh had a 63-yard scoring jaunt.
Welsh had 120 rushing yards on seven carries. Gordon caught five passes for 95 yards and the three touchdowns.
Washington totaled 323 yards of offense compared to Clairton’s 281.
McGuffey 35, Ringgold 7
Phillip McCuen ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, Kyle Brookman scored twice and McGuffey defeated visiting Ringgold 35-7 in a non-conference game.
The night started well for Ringgold (0-2) as the Rams’ Jamar Bethea returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown only 15 seconds into the game.
The early deficit didn’t phase McGuffey (2-0). The Highlanders tied the score in the first quarter, forged a 21-7 halftime lead and tacked on a pair of touchdowns in the second half.
McCuen tied the score at 7-7 on a 10-yard TD run off right end.
Brookman, who had one rushing and one receiving score, had a pair of TDs in the second quarter to put the Highlanders ahead for good. Brookman scored on a six-yard scamper to put McGuffey up 14-6. McCuen then found Brookman behind the Ringgold secondary and deep over the middle as the duo hooked up for a 34-yard scoring pass that made it 21-7.
McCuen pushed the McGuffey lead to 28-7 with a 12-yard touchdown run to the left side in the third quarter.
Fullback Dylan Drobol concluded the scoring with a two-yard scoring plunge with 9:41 remaining in the game.
Chartiers-Houston 31, West Greene 21
Chartiers-Houston shut out West Greene in the second half on the way to 31-21 victory in a non-conference game at Kennedy Field.
Zeke Watkins scored on runs of 5 and 10 yards in the second half and Anthony Romano hit a 35-yard field goal.
West Greene took a 14-0 lead on Colin Brady’s touchdown runs of 75 and 5 yards. He would add a 76-yard run in the second quarter and finish with a game-high 187 yards on 14 carries.
Terry Fetsko hit Jake Mele with a 21-yard scoring pass to put C-H (2-0) on the board and Kegan Kosek returned a fumble 20 yards for another score.
West Greene fell to 0-2.
West Allegheny 40, South Fayette 7
West Allegheny started slowly but scored the last 40 points of the game to defeat South Fayette, 40-7, in a non-conference game.
South Fayette took a 7-0 lead when Drew Wolhorsky hit Nate Deanes with a 7-yards scoring pass 3:16 into the game.
Then West Allegheny took over. Two field goals by Brayden Lambert cut South Fayette’s lead to 7-6. Then Nodin Tracy scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 6-yard run. He would also score on runs of 15 and 22 yards.
Brock Cornell would score the first of three third quarter scores when he ran it in from 8 yards out.
Michael Woodson scored the final TD of the game when he broke off a 22-yard run.
The win raise West Allegheny record to 2-0. The Indians have allowed just one touchdown on defense so far.
South Fayette fell to 1-1.
Bentworth 21, Avella 7
Quarterback Vitali Daniels scored three touchdowns to power Bentworth past host Avella, 21-7 in a non-conference game.
Daniels carried 15 times for 54 yards and scored on runs of 1, 2, and 11 yards. Ben Hays had 11 carries for 82 yards for Bentworth.
Broden Hamm scored on 3-yard run for Avella (0-2). The Eagles’ Isaiah Bradick had nine receptions for 116 yards.
North Allegheny 35, Canon-McMillan 21
Andrew Gavlike scored three touchdowns and rushed for 102 yards to help North Allegheny drop Canon-McMillan, 35-21 in a Class 6A Tri-County Five game.
North Allegheny (1-0, 2-0) took advantage of seven Canon-McMillan penalties in the first half to build a seemingly safe 27-7 halftime lead before the Big Macs rallied and closed to within one score in the third quarter.
Mike Evans threw a late first-half 8-yard touchdown pass for Treyvon Mullen and two to Austyn Winkleblech from 28 yards and again from 32 yards as the Big Macs trimmed NA’s lead to 27-21.
Gavlik scored from one yard out to put the game away for North Allegheny.
Evans completed 16 of 43 passes for 197 yards and the three touchdowns for C-M (0-1, 0-2).

Quarterback Cole Jones scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 2:12 remaining to give Jefferson-Morgan its first win of the season, 15-8, over host Waynesburg in a non-conference game.
Peters Township improved its record to 2-0 by defeating Seneca valley, the WPIAL’s top-ranked Class 6A team, 30-27.
California improved to 2-0 by rolling to a 48-0 victory at Charleroi. It was Charleroi’s first game of the season.
Burgettstown opned its season with a 38-22 victory at Beth-center in a non-league play. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-1.
