Avs sign Rodrigues

The Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche added more depth at forward by signing Evan Rodrigues to a one-year, $2 million deal Monday.

The move comes on the heels of losing Nazem Kadri in free agency to Calgary. The Avalanche are banking that Rodrigues can help fill the void.

Rodrigues arrives in the Mile High City after a season in Pittsburgh, where he set career highs with 19 goals and 24 assists. Rodrigues was the lone Penguins player to skate in every game last season.

The 29-year-old Rodrigues has played in 316 career NHL games in his time with Pittsburgh and Buffalo, the team that signed him as a free agent in April 2015.

Girls soccer

Ashlyn Basinger and Kaley Rohanna each scored two goals as Waynesburg stayed unbeaten in Class A Section 2 with a 5-0 win at Beth-Center on Monday.

Basinger also assisted on three goals as the Raiders improved to 3-0 in the section and 4-1 overall.

Rylei Rastoka added a goal, Lake Litwinovich had an assist and goalkeeper Peyton Cowell had Waynesburg’s third shutout.

n Lexi Durkacs had a hat trick to help Chartiers-Houston to a 4-0 shutout of South Allegheny in a Section 2 match in Class 1A.

Amelia Brose had the other goal for the Bucs (3-1, 6-1) and Kayla Brose had two assists. Ella Richie recorded her second shutout.

n Meredith Allender’s goal broke a tie and Bentworth held on for a 2-1 win over Monessen in Class A Section 2.

Monessen (0-3, 1-3) scored in the match’s first five minutes but Bentworth’s Emily Kisner tied the score 15 minutes later.

Tessa Charpentier assisted on both goal for the Bearcats (1-2-1, 1-3-1).

Boys soccer

Bentworth defeated host Brentwood 3-1 in a non-section match Monday.

Jerzy Timlin, Ryan Colbert and Coltyn Lusk were the goal scorers for the Bearcats (4-3). Julian Hays, Coltyn Lusk and Ryan Moessner registered assists. Goalkeepers Landon Urcho and D.J. Hays combined for six saves.

n Joel Chambers scored twice to help pace Charleroi to a 5-0 shutout of Yough in a non-section match.

Arlo McIntyre, Landon Bareus and Bryce Large also scored for the Cougars (2-0, 6-0). Nate Mazon recorded his fifth shutout.

Yough fell to 1-3 and 1-5.

Pitt game time set

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that Pitt’s Sept. 24 game against Rhode Island at Acrisure Stadium will kick off at noon and be televised by the ACC Network.

Men’s golf

Washington & Jefferson opened the 2022-23 season with a strong performance, finishing in third place among 14 competing teams at The Gauntlet, which was hosted by Drew University on Sunday and Monday at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Club in Harrisburg.

W&J tallied a 56-hole team score of 586 (290-296) behind champion McDaniel (583) and runner-up Drew (584).

Senior Colin Robinson led W&J by tying for fifth place. Robinson finished two-under with a 36-hole total of 142. Robinson posted a four-under 68 Sunday and shot 74 in Monday’s round.

Field hockey

Peters Township routed Hempfield 11-0 Monday night.

Serafina Forlini led the way for PT with three goals and Bella Elm contributed two goals and a pair of assists. Ava Zimmer, with two tallies, also had a multi-goal game.

Cece Backo, Megan Wente, Anna Kokosyznski and Ella Liebscher each had one goal.
