1961 – Allen Green kicks a 27-yard field goal with one second remaining to give the Dallas Cowboys a 27-24 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s the Cowboys’ first win as a member of the NFL.

1965 – Bob Mavrich scores three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, as Canon-McMillan High School defeats visiting Braddock, 20-7.

1973 – The Pittsburgh Triangles of the 16-team World Team Tennis, sign three-time Grand Slam champion Evonne Goolagong. The 22-year-old Goolagong has won singles titles at Wimbledon, the French Open and United States Open.

1982 – John Hairston rushes for 195 yards and two touchdowns as Trinity ends a 12-game losing streak with a 35-7 victory over Southmoreland at College Field.

1982 – Mapletown (1-1-1) ends a 20-game winless streak with a 12-7 victory over German Township. Ed Pekar throws two touchdown passes for the Maples.

1987 – Jaguar Spur, with driver Dick Stillings, wins The Little Brown Jug, the second leg of pacing Triple Crown, at the Delaware (Ohio) County Fairgrounds.

1991 – Waynesburg High School hires Jim Hoy as its boys basketball coach. Hoy spent the last two years as head coach at Freedom in Beaver County. He repalces Glenn Kyle, who resigned after 10 years with the Raiders to become an assistant at California University.

1996 – Jim Leyland informs the Pittsburgh Pirates that he will resign at the end of the season, his 11th as the team’s manager.

2011 – Pitt and Syracuse, both longtime members of the Big East Conference, apply for membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

1959 – Bubba Lewis rushes for 233 yards and one touchdown, and Larry Blout scores three TDs as Mapletown High School defeats Jefferson-Morgan, 33-7.

1970 – Wash High snaps an 11-game football losing streak by beating Uniontown, 23-20. Robert Bennett scores the winning touchdown on a two-yard run with 9:34 remaining.

1970 – Jefferson-Morgan overcomes a 14-point first-quarter deficit and defeats defending WPIAL Class B champion German, 26-14. The Rockets’ Jim Culp runs for one touchdown and throws two scoring passes to Brad Monas.

1971 – Don Kasperik’s one-yard touchdown run with less than nine minutes remaining enables Washington & Jefferson to open defense of its Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship with a 13-6 victory at Bethany.

1986 – Washington’s Larry Thompson, running his first cross country race of the season, wins the County Coaches Meet at Mingo Park in a time of 17:07. Thompson wins by 54 seconds. The Prexies’ Sue Schneck wins the girls division in 22:07. The boys team titles go to McGuffey with Trinity winning the girls competition.

1987 – Senior tailback Jerry Caldwell rushes for 245 yards and three touchdowns as Fort Cherry defeats visiting Avonworth 21-13. Caldwell scores on runs of 63, 72 and 61 yards.

1991 – Michelle Fischer becomes Ringgold’s all-time leading goal scorer in girls soccer. Fischer’s goal in the Rams’ 8-0 victory over Carlynton gave her 49 for her career, one more than Julianne Rue.

2011 – The Atlantic Coast Conference extends its northern reach by officially accpeting Pitt and Syracuse, boosting the league’s membership to 14 schools.
