Landan Stevenson rushed for 222 yards on 17 carries and scored three times to help Mapletown remain unbeaten and defeat Beth-Center, 43-14, in a Class A Tri-County South Conference opener for both teams Friday night.
Stevenson scored on runs of 27,4 and 5 yards for the Maples (1-0, 4-0), who led 28-14 at halftime Brody Evans completed all three of his pass attempts for 37 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for two scores.
After the first quarter ended tied 8-8, Mapletown scored 20 points in the second quarter. Evans passed 24 yards to Evan Griffin for a touchdown and then scored on runs of six and five yards to put the Maples ahead for good.
Ethan Verasko rushed for 77 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 25-yard run in the second quarter for Beth-Center (0-1, 1-3). Tyler Debnar opened the scoring with a one-yard TD run for the Bulldogs.
Carmichaels 46, West Greene 27
Tyler Richmond scored four touchdowns, one on a game-changing interception return in the final minute of the first half, Alec Anderson had a hand in six scores and Carmichaels defeated West Greene 46-27 in the Class A Tri-County South Conference opener.
Carmichaels (1-0, 3-1) overcame a big first game by West Greene’s Colin Brady, who rushed for three touchdowns and 250 yards in the first half. Brady’s TD runs of 50, 49 and 65 yards, all in the second quarter, gave West Greene (0-1, 0-4) a 19-12 lead.
However, Richmond intercepted a West Greene pass and weaved his way 39 yards through the Pioneers for a touchdown that brought the Mikes to within 19-18 with only 20 seconds left in the first half.
Carmichaels carried that momentum into the second half. Alec Anderson, who threw four touchdown passes and ran for another scorer, connected with A.J. Donaldson for a 21-yard TD that put the Mikes ahead for good at 26-19.
Anderson and Richmond hooked up for a 25-yard TD pass late in the third quarter and again in the fourth for an 82-yard score. Richmond opened the scoring with a 39-yard touchdown pass.
Brady threw a 61-yard TD pass to Seth Burns in the fourth quarter that trimmed Carmichaels’ lead to 40-27, but Anderson capped the scoring with a six-yard TD run with 1:17 remaining. Anderson had a two-yard scoring jaunt in the second quarter.
McGuffey 55, Brentwood 0
Kyle Brookman scored three touchdowns and had two called back because of penalties to power McGuffey to a 55-0 drubbing of Brentwood in the Class AA Century Conference.
The win moved McGuffey to 1-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall. Brentwood fell to 0-1 in the conference and 1-3 overall.
Brookman scored on runs of 30, 10 and 26 yards for the Highlanders.
Three players accounted for five touchdowns in the first half as McGuffey built a 35-0 halftime lead and sent the game into the Mercy Rule for the third quater.
Brookman broke off runs of 30 and 10 yards to make it 14-0. Ethan Dietrich scored twice in the second half. He went over from 19 yards then caught a 4-yards touchdown pass from Phillip McCuen to make it 28-0.
McCuen capped the first half scoring when he broke lose for a 15-yard touchdown run.
Dylan Droboj and Charles Wagers scored on second-half runs.
Monessen 49, Bentworth 9
Tyvaughn Kershaw rushed three times for 88 yards and scored three touchdowns to help Monessen stomp on host Bentworth 49-9 in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
The win moves the Greyhounds to 1-0 in the conference and 2-2 overall. Bentworth fell to 0-1 and 2-2.
Timothy Kershaw caught a 55-yard scoring pass from Dan Dozier to open the scoring. Daevon scored on 5-yard run and 75-yard punt return.
Vitali Daniels passed for 92 yards and a TD for Bentworth.
Penn-Trafford 14, Belle Vernon 13
Conlin Green scored his second touchdown of the game and Logan Swartz kicked both extra points in the fourth quarter as Penn-Trafford came away with a 14-13 win over host Belle Vernon in a non-conference game.
Green rushed 23 times for 123 yards for Penn-Trafford (3-1). Quinton Martin and Jake Gedekoh both rushed for 69 yards.
Martin gave Belle Vernon (1-2) a 7-0 lead when he broke off a 50-yard run for a touchdown in the first quarter.
P-T tied it when Green went over from seven yards, also in the first quarter.
Belle Vernon regained the lead on a 40-yard run by Gedekoh but Willie Schwere missed the extra-point attempt.
Cornell 48, Avella 0
Raequan Troutman scored five touchdowns and Cornell won a Class A Black Hills Conference opener over Avella, 48-0.
Troutman scored on runs of 51, three, 60, four and 45 yards.
Khylil Johnson added scoring jaunts of 17 yards in the second quarter and 35 yards in the fourth as Cornell improved to 2-1 overall.
Avella’s record dropped to 0-4.
Cole Jaworoski had 54 rushing yards for the Eagles.
In other games
Keystone Oaks used a big first half to defeat visiting Waynesburg 47-13 in the Class 2A Century Conference. Also in the Century Conference, Sto-Rox led 69-0 at halftime en route to an 87-7 win over Charleroi.
In the Class A Black Hills Conference, Bishop Canevin overcame a halftime deficit to win at Burgettstown, 38-17. California remained undefeated with a 44-6 win over Jefferson-Morgan in the Class A Tri-County South Conference.
West Mifflin was a 35-0 winner over Ringgold in a non-conference game at Joe Montana Stadium
