1965 – Frank Vactor runs for two touchdowns and throws scoring passes of 20 yards to Baron Johnson and 75 yards to Blaine Henderson as Washington cruises to a 26-0 victory over Chartiers Valley.

1967 – Jim Bakken of St. Louis Cardinals kicks an NFL-record seven field goals to give the Cardinals a 28-14 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

1976 – Avella, playing its first game in three weeks, scores 27 first-half points and defeats visiting Mon Valley Catholic 27-16. Gary Kusich returns an interception 65 yards for a touchdown and scores on a three-yard run for Avella.

1984 – Rick Sutcliffe throws a two-hitter and leads the Chicago Cubs to their first league title since 1945 with a 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh.

Sept. 25

1962 – Sonny Liston knocks out Floyd Patterson at 2:06 of the first round at Comiskey Park in Chicago to win the world heavyweight boxing title.

1976 – Dennis Pazzabon runs for a touchdown and throws for another score, and Kent Ewell kicks two field goals, as Waynesburg College defeats host California State 20-14.

1981 – Willie Davis rushes for 276 yards on 21 carries, and teammate Jim Edwards gains 164 yards on 18 attempts, as host Charleroi High School defeats McGuffey 35-13 in a Century Conference football opener.

1981 – California High School’s Brian Schaum scores five touchdowns – on runs of 11, four and one yards, and touchdown passes of 28 and 11 yards from Brendan Folmar – as the Trojans defeat visiting Carmichaels 34-19 in a Tri-County South Conference game.

1987 – Darrin Balliard’s 25-yard field goal as time expries gives undefeated Ringgold a 12-10 victory over Trinity at College Field.

1994 – Oliver McCall scores a major boxing upset by stopping Lennox Lewis 31 seconds into the second round to win the WBC heavyweight title in London.

2011 – A 38-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham with four seconds remaining gives the Pittsburgh Steelers a 23-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
