1963 – Jack Nicklaus, at 23, becomes the youngest golfer to win the Masters, beating Tony Lema by a stroke.

1970 – Donn Clendenon hits a bases-loaded single in the 11th inning, driving in the tiebreaking runs as the New York Mets win their first season opener ever 5-3 over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the final opening day at Forbes Field.

1979 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade pitcher Jerry Reuss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for pitcher Rick Rhoden.

1985 – New Jersey’s Herschel Walker rushes for a USFL-record 233 yards in leading the Generals to a 31-25 victory over the Houston Gamblers. Walker also breaks his own USFL record for the longest run from scrimmage by going 89 yards on his second carry of the game.

1996 – Carmichaels High School’s Justin Voithofer, who averaged 29 points per game and led the Mikes to the WPIAL Class A semifinals and PIAA playoffs, is named Player of the Year on the Observer-Reporter’s Boys Basketbal All-District Team.

2010 – Rich Bonnaure, who guided South Fayette to the PIAA Class AA boys basketball championship with a win over Strawberry Mansion in the finals, is named the state Class AA Coach of the Year.

2012 – Evgeni Malkin scores his 50th goal as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 in the regular-season finale.
