1960 – Vernon Law throws a seven-hit shutout as the Pittsburgh Pirates win their home opener, 13-0 over the Cincinnati Reds.
1966 – The Washington Redskins announce they have signed quarterback Harry Theofiledes, who passed for 40 touchdowns in three seasons for Waynesburg College.
1968 – Bob Goalby wins The Masters after Roberto de Vincenzo, was was tied for the lead, is penalized for signing an inaccurate scorecard after playing the final hole.
1971 – John Reihner of Washington, the defending PIAA champion, sets the WPIAL record in the discus with a throw of 183 feet in a dual meet against Waynesburg.
1972 – Chartiers-Houston’s John Heiser breaks his school record in the two-mile run for the fourth time in a week by running 11:10.0 in a dual meet against South Park. Heiser betters his previous record by five seconds.
1979 – George Ferguson’s goal 47 seconds into overtime gives the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres in the third and deciding game of a Stanley Cup playoff series.
1983 – Hayden Buckley resigns as athletic director and head football coach at Waynesburg College. Buckley held both jobs for 10 years and had a 52-32-3 record as football coach. Assistant Bill Tornabene is promoted to head football coach, and basketball coach Rudy Marisa is named athletic director.
1987 – Waynesburg College’s Tim Mitchell, a freshman from Jefferson-Morgan, throws a no-hitter as the Yellow Jackets defeat Bethany 4-0 and split a baseball doubleheader.
1987 – The Arena Football League announces it will debut with a game at Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena.
1988 – Tony Esposito is hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins, becoming vice president and general manager.
1991 – Jalen Rose scores 16 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to the East to a 104-103 victory over the West in the Dapper Dan Roundball Classic at the Civic Arena. In the preliminary game, Canon-McMillan’s George Turnbull scores 13 points and grabs a team-high nine rebounds but the WPIAL falls to the City-West Penn team, 124-99.
1993 – The NHL’s longest winning streak ends at 17 games when the Pittsburgh Penguins settled for a 6-6 tie with the New Jersey Devils on a late goal by Joe Mullen.
2013 – The Canon-McMillan wrestling team, which won the PIAA Class AAA Team Tournament and the state title at the PIAA Individual Championships, is named the Observer-Reporter Sports Headliner.
