In the NBA
Jalen Brunson scored 29 points, RJ Barrett had 26 and the New York Knicks took a 3-1 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first-round series with a 102-93 victory on Sunday.
Josh Hart moved into the starting lineup and added 19 points and seven rebounds for the fifth-seeded Knicks, who can reach the second round for the first time since 2013 with a victory in Cleveland on Wednesday.
New York forced Cleveland All-Star Donovan Mitchell into one of the worst games of his postseason career, finishing with just 11 points on 5-for-18 shooting. Darius Garland had 23 points and 10 assists for the Cavs, bouncing back nicely after going 4 for 21 in the Knicks’ Game 3 romp. Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert each scored 14 points.
n Stephen Curry scored 32 points but gave Sacramento a late chance when he called a timeout Golden State didn’t have, and the defending champion Warriors held on to beat the Kings 126-125 when Harrison Barnes missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, evening their playoff series at two games apiece.
In the NHL
Seth Jarvis scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes snapped an eight-game postseason road losing streak with a 5-2 victory over New York on Sunday, pushing the Islanders to the brink of elimination.
Sebastian Aho added a goal and two assists and Antti Raanta made 27 saves in helping the Canes win on the road in the playoffs for the first time since the second round in 2021.
n Taylor Hall and Jake DeBrusk each scored twice, Linus Ullmark stopped 41 shots and the Boston Bruins beat the Florida Panthers 6-2 to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series.
Brad Marchand and Tyler Bertuzzi also had goals for the Bruins.
In golf
Lilia Vu birdied the first playoff hole to win her first major at the Chevron Championship after fellow American Angel Yin hit her approach shot into the water on Sunday.
Yin’s second shot came up short and left and splashed into the pond guarding the par-5 18th hole, and Vu hit her approach just over the green. Vu went with putter from off the green and came up well short, but she converted from about 10 feet for the victory.
College golf
Washington & Jefferson rallied from a sizable deficit to win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s championship on Saturday.
The Presidents carded a 72-hole team score of 1,211. Allegheny finished one-shot off the pace at 1,212 and Westminster was third just two shots back at 1,213.
W&J will be making its ninth appearance at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships, which are scheduled for May 16-19 at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
W&J had entered the final round 13 shots back of Allegheny and in third place. The Presidents carded a team score of 292 in the final round.
Leading the comeback was Cade Patterson, who earned spring medalist honors with a three-over score. Patterson shot a two-under final round of 68. Colin Robinson was fourth at 9-over and Andrew Platt tied for fifth at 10-over. Platt made par on the par four 18th hole to secure the championship for the Presidents.
Matthew Lacek finished in 12th place.
Waynesburg finished seventh in the nine-team field. Matthew Karpeal tied for 10th with a 36-hole score of 153.
n W&J freshman Megan Joyce and sophomore Christina McGinnis recorded top-5 finishes to pace the Presidents at the PAC Women’s Championship.
Joyce finished in third place with a 342 score to earn the PAC Newcomer of the Year award. McGinnis placed fourth with a 346.
