1953 – Jimmy Kennedy breaks the California State Teachers College basketball single-game scoring record with 42 points in the Vulcans’ 94-74 victory over Millersville at Herron Hall.
1958 – Ollie Payne scores 49 points as Charleroi High School routs Brownsville 107-64. Payne’s 49 points breaks the Charleroi single-game scoring record of 45, set by Fred Uhlman in 1948. The Cougars’ 107 points also is a school record.
1966 – Michael (Mo) Scarry resigns as head football coach and athletic director at Waynesburg College to accept a defensive coaching position with the Washington Redskins.
1968 – The Pittsburgh Steelers hire Waynesburg College head coach Carl DePasqua as their defensive line coach. DePasqua guided Waynesburg to a 19-1 record in two seasons and the 1966 NAIA national championship.
1970 – Pete Maravich scores 69 points, including 47 in the second half, to set the NCAA single-game record, but LSU loses to Alabama 106-104.
1973 – Steubenville successfully uses slowdown tactics and defeats visiting California State 19-17 in a non-conference basketball game. Cal trails 10-9 at halftime and makes only six field goals in the game.
1976 – Darryl Sittler of the Toronto Maple Leafs sets an NHL record for points in a game with six goals and four assists in an 11-4 victory over the Boston Bruins.
1978 – Peters Township’s Eric Sorensen scores all 21 of his points, including the 1,000th of his career, during the second half but Upper St. Clair defeats the Indians 63-51.
1980 – The WPIAL Board of Control decides by unanimous vote that next year’s wrestling match between Trinity and Chartiers-Houston will be held without spectators. The ruling is in response to disruptive fan behavior at the Jan. 22 match.
1981 – Michael Seibert of Washington and Judy Blumberg, unfazed when a broken skate strap interrupts their routine, come back to win the senior ice dance title at the United States Figure Skating Championships in San Diego.
1984 – Charleroi wins its first basketball section title in a quarter century. The Cougars get 29 points from Andrei Constantino in an 85-50 victory over Albert Gallatin that nets the Section 11 AAA-AA title.
1990 – Lisa Leslie of Morningside High School in Inglewood, Calif., scores 101 points in the first half against South Torrance High School. The final score is 102-24 as the coach of South Torrance decides not to bring his team out for the second half.
1995 – Joe Mullen becomes the first American-born player to reach 1,000 points in the NHL when he assists on two of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first three goals in a 7-3 victory over Florida.
1996 – Mark Keener scores 10 of his 14 points in overtime as Waynesburg College wins its 11th straight basketball game, 81-66, over visiting Washington & Jefferson.
1997 – Trinity defeats Gateway, 45-15, in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Team Tournament. Gateway is coached by Trinity graduate Dick Bane.
1999 – Thirteen Waynesburg College players score at least two points and the Yellow Jackets defeat visiting D’Youville, 81-44, to give coach Rudy Marisa his 500th career victory.
2005 – Sara McKinney scores 17 points for 11th-ranked California University and becomes the Vulcans’ all-time leading scorer during their 51-41 victory over Slippery Rock. McKinney has 1,896 points.
2008 – Ronald Roman makes a three-point field goal with two tenths of a second remaining to give Pitt a 55-54 victory over West Virginia in a Big East Conference game.
2011 – Canon-McMillan’s Emily Hansen scores 17 points, including her 1,000th career point, but the Big Macs lose to Bethel Park 56-40 in Section 4-AAAA.
2012 – Cameron Walls-Mitchell has 17 points and 11 rebounds as Bentworth defeats Avella 76-64 to give the Bearcats the Section 3-A championship. It is Bentworth’s second section title in three years under head coach Bob Kennedy.
2012 – The Pittsburgh Steelers hire Todd Haley as their offensive coordinator.
