WG downs Bucs

Taking advantage of seven forfeits, West Greene downed Chartiers-Houston 42-25 in a non-section wrestling match Wednesday night.

Chartiers-Houston’s Jesse Orbin (172) had the only pin of the dual meet. It was the first of the season for the Bucs.

Dukes get 16th win

Dae Dae Grant’s 20 points helped Duquesne defeat George Mason 75-52 Wednesday night.

Grant also had seven assists for the Dukes (6-5 Atlantic 10 Conference, 16-8). Tevin Brewer shot 7 for 10, including 3 for 4 from beyond the arc to add 17 points. Joe Reece recorded eight points and went 4 of 6 from the field.

Josh Oduro led the Patriots (5-7, 13-12) in scoring, finishing with 13 points and 13 rebounds. George Mason also got 12 points from DeVon Cooper. In addition, Ginika Ojiako had nine points.

Duquesne took the lead with 9:54 remaining in the first half and never looked back. Grant led his team in scoring with 13 points in the first half to help put them up 31-23 at the break.

Duquesne extended its lead to 53-34 during the second half, fueled by an 11-0 scoring run. Rodney Gunn Jr. scored a team-high seven points in the second half as their team closed out the win.

In baseball

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired left-hander Anthony Misiewicz from their cross-state rival Kansas City Royals for cash considerations on Wednesday.

To make room on the 40-man roster, St. Louis designated right-hander James Naile for assignment on the Missouri native’s 30th birthday.

The 28-year-old Misiewicz, who was expected to compete for a spot in the Royals bullpen, split last season between the Mariners and Kansas City. He went 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 29 innings.

In the NFL

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will undergo surgery on his injured elbow later this month and should be fully recovered by training camp.

A person familiar with the decision said Purdy will undergo the surgery on Feb. 22 to repair the torn ligament in his right elbow. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t announce the decision.

In college basketball

Tyrin Lawrence knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer as the Vanderbilt Commodores snapped an 11-game skid against its in-state rival by upsetting sixth-ranked Tennessee 66-65 Wednesday night.

Students rushed the court and joined the Commodores in celebrating easily the biggest win in coach Jerry Stackhouse’s fourth season. Then the Commodores (5-6, 12-12) celebrated by running along the courtside slapping high-fives.

Tennessee (8-2, 19-5) had a chance to finish off the win after Olivier Nkamhoua knocked down a 15-foot jumper with 50 seconds left for a 65-63 lead. Liam Robbins missed a turnaround jumper with 27 seconds for Vanderbilt, and Zakai Zeigler grabbed the rebound.

  • Jett Howard made six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, Hunter Dickinson had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Michigan beat Nebraska 93-72.
  • After entering the season with a Top 10 ranking and Big East title expectations, No. 23 Creighton started 6-0 before losing six straight, including the conference opener.

Baylor Scheierman had 19 points and nine rebounds, Ryan Nembhard added 15 on 6-of-7 shooting and dished out four assists, and Creighton fended off a feisty Seton Hall, 75-62.

  • Lance Terry scored 19 points, the last two on a game-winning tip-in at the buzzer that gave Georgia Tech a 70-68 victory over Notre Dame.

In the NBA

Kristaps Porzingis scored 36 points and matched a career high with eight 3-pointers, and the Washington Wizards beat the Charlotte Hornets 118-104 Wednesday night to stop a three-game skid.

  • Jarrett Allen scored 20 points, Evan Mobley added 19 and the Cleveland Cavaliers won their fourth straight game, 113-85 over the Detroit Pistons despite resting their starting backcourt.

All-Star starter Donovan Mitchell (groin) and Darius Garland (thumb) got the night off to heal some nagging injuries and the Cavs barely missed their top guards.
