1947 – Charleroi High School’s Freddie Uhlman scores 45 points – the high single-game total of the season in the WPIAL – to lead the Cougars to a 73-38 basketball victory over Waynesburg.

1963 – Joe McCune, head football coach at North Braddock Scott for seven seasons, is hired as coach at Monongahela, succeeding Al Cree.

1969 – Bob Clites scores 26 points, John Billetz has 22 and Mapletown wins its first basketball section championship with a 79-38 victory over Waynesburg in Section 19.

1969 – Don Ashbaugh scores 46 points as Peters Township clinches a tie for the Section 11 basketball championship with a 106-48 victory over McGuffey.

1973 – Undefeated Charles Hollihan gets a pin in the heavyweight bout that rallies Washington to a 24-24 tie with Trinity at the Wash High gymnasium.

1976 – Kevin Bealko sets Waynesburg College’s single-season scoring record with a 38-point performance in the Yellow Jackets’ 98-77 victory over Behrend.

1978 – Robbie Uhlman scores 17 points and becomes the third player in Charleroi history with 1,000 career points but the Cougars lose to Monessen 85-81 in triple overtime. Julius Dawkins scores 31 points for the Greyhounds.

1979 – Trinity’s wrestling team caps a 16-0 dual meet regular season with a 41-6 victory over Canon-McMillan. Joe Deprosky (112), Dan Oliverio (155) and Jeff Watson (185) each win by fall for the Hillers.

1982 – A tip-in by freshman Andre Williams with 29 seconds left gives Pitt a 69-68 victory over Duquesne in an Eastern Eight contest at the Civic Arena. The game includes a benches-clearing brawl in the second half.

1984 – Charleroi’s Kevin Lee makes 18 of 32 shots and scores 38 points, including the 1,000th of his high school career, as the Cougars defeat Frazier 82-60.

1985 – The Chartiers-Houston girls basketball team gets 24 points from Chris Zambell as the Bucs win their 41st consecutive Section 18-AA-A game, a 63-61 squeaker over visiting Washington.

1986 – Bentworth’s Dan Conn scores 40 points, including 12 free throws, to lead the Bearcats to a 108-88 victory at California.

1990 – Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins ends his 46-game scoring streak, the second-longest in NHL history, leaving after two periods of a 4-3 overtime victory over the New York Rangers.

1990 – The United States Olympic hockey team upsets No. 2 seed Czechoslovakia 7-3 at the Lake Placid Winter Games.

1996 – Major League Baseball approves the sale of the Pittsburgh Pirates to an ownership group headed by Kevin McClatchy.

1998 – Mt. Pleasant’s Joe Walton is hit with his fifth stalling call with only 19 seconds remaining in his heavyweight bout and is disqualified, giving McGuffey a 28-26 victory in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament championship match.

1998 – Washington heavyweight Tim Carl gets a late first-period pin to give the Prexies a 28-25 victory over West Greene in the WPIAL Class AA Team Tournament championship at Charleroi.

2004 – Waynesburg and Westminster combine to attempt an NCAA Division III three-pointers, making 36, in the Yellow Jackets’ 94-88 victory at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
