1951 – Mark Workman makes 20 of 40 shots and scores 48 points to lead West Virginia to a 76-60 basketball victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson. Andy Mestrovic scores 16 points to pace the Presidents, who lead 35-34 at halftime. It’s the last game between the schools until 2005.

1956 – Washington High School wins the outright Section 4 basketball championship by defeating Trinity 68-40 while Mt. Lebanon was upsetting second-place Dormont 74-51. Bill Pryor sparked the Prexies against the Hillers by scoring 18 points.

1959 – California State Teachers College, behind 34 points from Roger Hotz and 32 by Ken Rager, outlasts Clarion 103-96 in three overtimes.

1959 – Washington & Jefferson sets its single-game scoring record with a 116-60 victory over Waynesburg. Larry Romboski leads the Presidents with 27 points.

1959 – After Charleroi holds the ball for more than two minutes, Jim Chacko makes two free throws with five seconds left to give the Cougars a 45-43 victory over Monessen in game for the Section 5 championship before 3,270 at the Pitt Field House.

1972 – Utah center Zelmo Beatty scores 63 points as the Stars defeat the visiting Pittsburgh Condors 149-140 in an ABA game.

1976 – Fort Cherry wins its first section wrestling team title at the Section 10-AA tournament in Avella. The Rangers’ Bob McCaffrey (145 pounds), Joe Zombeck (167) and heavyweight Ray Kemp win their weight classes.

1986 – Rogers Waters, Brian Blasinsky and John Tekavec combine for 55 points as Carmichaels outlasts Chartiers-Houston 61-59 in double overtime in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA basketball playoffs at Charleroi.

1991 – Mario Lemieux has his second consecutive four-point game and the Pittsburgh Penguins win their ninth straight home game, 11-4, over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

2004 – Charleroi heavyweight John Maraldo becomes the first 8th-seeded wrestler to win a WPIAL championship by decisioning Chartiers-Houston’s Elliott Bates 2-1 in the Class AA finals.

2010 – Ashton Gibbs scores 21 points and Gilbert Brown has 16, leading Pitt to a 70-65 upset of No. 3-ranked Villanova.

2012 – Jared Deep scores 22 points as Trinity defeats Keystone Oaks 72-62 in the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs at Moon.

2012 – Zach Bellhy scores 23 points and seventh-seeded Washington & Jefferson shoots 57 percent from the field to upset No. 2 seed Thiel 91-89 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference quarterfinals.

2012 – Russ Moore is hired as head football coach at Waynesburg High School. It is Moore’s second stint with the Raiders.
