1953 – Dave Henderson scores 17 points and Carl Grinage has 14 as Washington High School beats Braddock, 54-39, in the first round of the WPIAL Class A basketball playoffs at the Pitt Field House.?
1954 – Washington wins its fifth straight section basketball title and 56th consecutive league game, defeating visiting Trinity 54-42 for the Section 4 championship. Joe Comfort leads Wash High with 16 points.
1974 – Ron Brown scores 32 points, including the game-winner at the buzzer, as Penn State upsets seventh-ranked Pitt, 66-64. Brown makes 14 of 20 shots from the field.
1979 – Waynesburg dismantles Greensburg Central Catholic 42-10 in the the WPIAL Class AA wrestling semifinals, and Trinity crushes Latrobe 34-11 in the Class AAA semifinals.
1980 – Waynesburg defeats Burgettstown, 32-21, in the Class AA finals to win its 16th WPIAL wrestling championship.
1983 – Tim Kostolansky scores 22 points and Mon Valley Catholic pulls away in the second half to defeat Fairchance-Georges 59-47 at Hamer Hall for the Spartans’ first WPIAL basketball playoff victory.
1985 – Fort Cherry, the top seed in Class AA, defeats Washington, 35-22, to win the school’s first WPIAL wrestling team championship. Canon-McMillan wins the Class AAA title by defeating Latrobe, 30-15.
1985 – Indiana coach Bob Knight is ejected five minutes into the Hoosiers’ 72-63 loss to Purdue when he throws a chair across the court. Knight, after two fouls called on his team, is hit with his first technical. While Purdue was shooting the technical, Knight picks up a chair from the bench area and throws it across the court, earning his second technical.
1990 – Danny Jones scores 20 points to become Washington & Jefferson’s all-time scoring leader (1,404 points) but Grove City defeats the Presidents 78-66 in a PAC playoff game at Carnegie Mellon.
1996 – Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr each score their 50th goal of the season as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Hartford Whalers 5-4.
2005 – Kevin Pittsnogle scores 20 of his 22 points in the second half as West Virginia rallies to beat Pitt 70-66 at the Petersen Events Center.
2010 – Trinity snaps a nine-game losing streak in the postseason by defeating Center 59-56 in the first round of the Class AAA boys basketball playoffs at Canon-McMillan. The Hillers’ Josh Valentic scores 28 points, including 18 in the first half.
2013 – Burgettstown sophomore Austin McDermitt wins the 106-pound title and is named Outstanding Wrestler at the WPIAL Class AA Championships held at Charters Valley.
