1940 – College basketball is televised for the first time. Station W2XBS broadcasts a basketball doubleheader from New York’s Madison Square Garden. Pitt plays Fordham and New York University takes on Georgetown.
1959 – Los Angeles Rams general manager Pete Rozelle trades seven players and two draft picks to the Chicago Cardinals in exchange for running back Ollie Matson.
1959 – California State Teachers College’s Roger Hotz scores a school-record 47 points as the Vulcans upset Slippery Rock 92-74.
1960 – The United States hockey team scores six goals in the third period to beat Czechoslovakia 9-4 and win the gold medal in the Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, Calif.
1961 – Allen Roberts (88 pounds) and Bob Boyd (145) upset previously undefeated opponents and Waynesburg’s wrestling team goes on to beat Trinity 29-14 at Washington High School. The win gives Waynesburg a 13-0 dual-meet record and a 27-match winning streak.
1973 – Ted Maczuzak, playing his final collegiate game, scores a school-record 42 points and leads Waynesburg College to a 125-99 victory over visiting Malone.
1986 – Dave Parker, Dale Berra, Joaquin Andujar, Keith Hernandez and three other major leaguers linked to drug use are suspended for one year by commissioner Peter Ueberroth, but still may play if they donate 10 percent of the salaries to drug-prevention programs.
1987 – Glenn Teeter becomes the first Peters Township wrestler to win two section championships when he wins the 105-pound weight class at the Section 7-AAA tournament.
1989 – Shawn Evans’ three-point field goal with three seconds left gives Washington a 65-63 victory over Knoch in a Class AAA first-round playoff game at Chartiers Valley.
1998 – Andy Migyanko becomes the fourth Trinity wrestler, and first since 1970, to win three regional titles with a 9-0 victory over Derry’s Mike May in the 112-pound final of the Class AAA Southwest Regional at Chartiers Valley.
