1960 – The St. Louis Cardinals’ Stan Musial insists he take a $20,000 pay cut. “Stan the Man” believes he was overpaid in 1957 and 1958 and his salary should be based on his play last season.

1962 – The Gallatin Tigers defeat Atlasburg 8-0 to win the Washington County Soccer League championship. Tom DeRosa scores four goals for Gallatin.

1969 – Roy Campanella and Stan Musial are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1979 – Terry Bradshaw throws four touchdown passes to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to their third Super Bowl win, a 35-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Bradshaw, the game’s MVP, completes 17 of 30 passes for 318 yards.

1981 – Mike Pratt scores a game-high 26 points and Steve Hamay has all of his 15 points in the second half as Washington & Jefferson defeats defending Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion Allegheny, 79-63.

1982 – Bill Cowher, defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs and a Carnegie native, is hired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

1984 – Washington’s Michael Seibert and partner Judy Blumberg make the U.S. Olympic team by winning the ice dancing competition at the U.S. Championships in Salt Lake City.

1988 – Holli Martos scores 18 points, including Mon Valley Catholic’s final three, to lead the Spartans to a 53-50 victory over visiting Geibel and ending the Gators’ streak of 32 consecutive girls basketball section victories.

1990 – John McEnroe becomes the first player thrown out of the Australian Open. McEnroe’s tantrum comes while leading Mike Pernfors 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, 2-4.

1991 – Elizabeth Proudfit scores 34 points to power Washington to a 67-49 victory over Burgettstown, improving the Little Prexies’ girls basketball record to 12-3.

1995 – McGuffey heavyweight Dan Terrell gets a first-period pin to give No. 2-ranked McGuffey a 26-25 victory over No. 3-ranked Trinity, 26-25.

Jan. 22

1954 – Running back Elmo Natali of California State Teachers College is selected in the 10th round of the NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns.

1957 – Ollie Payne scores 11 points and Charleroi High School ends Monessen’s 38-game section winning streak by defeating the Greyhounds 37-29. The contest draws a crowd of 3,444, the largest to see a basketball game at Monessen.

1954 – John Beatty scores 25 points, including a game-winning basket with five seconds left, as Charleroi edges Monessen 44-42.

1963 – Rick Sonneborn of West Greene High School scores 45 points but the Pioneers lose to Carmichaels 80-65 in a Section 18-B game.

1973 – George Foreman knocks out Joe Frazier in the second round in Kingston, Jamaica, to win the world heavyweight boxing title. Foreman knocks down Frazier six times.

1975 – The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Syl Apps is named MVP at the NHL All-Star Game in Montreal after scoring two goals.

1989 – Joe Montana drives the San Francisco 49ers 92 yards in 11 plays and throws a game-winning touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds left to beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 20-16, in the Super Bowl.

1991 – Brian Miller sets Ringgold’s single-game scoring record with 39 points in the Rams’ 75-53 victory over visiting Latrobe.

2006 – The Pittsburgh Steelers are the first team since the 1985 Patriots to win three postseason road games, thanks to a 34-17 dismantling of the Denver Broncos in the AFC title game.

2011 – B.J. Monteiro has 20 points and six rebounds to lead Duquesne to an 83-67 win over Charlotte, improving the Dukes’ Atlantic 10 Conference record to 5-0.
