1943 – Waynesburg College’s wrestling team has its 30-match winning streak end with a 12-12 tie against visiting Purdue.
1959 – Vince Lombardi, assistant coach of the New York Giants, is hired as head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Packers.
1969 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select defensive tackle Joe Greene from North Texas State with the fourth pick in the NFL draft.
1969 – Michael Caldwell scores 25 points and Pitt beats West Virginia 90-87. It’s the Panthers’ first win over WVU coach Bucky Waters.
1983 – Tony Ellis scores 20 points and leads a second-half charge as Washington High School’s boys basketball team moves into a tie for the Section 10-AA-A lead with Bentworth by defeating the Bearcats 61-43.
1985 – Lisa Burt sets the McGuffey girls single-game scoring record with 45 points in the Highlanders’ 63-45 victory at Frazier. Burt makes 19 of 31 shots from the field.
1988 – Waynesburg College wins its 20th consecutive men’s basketball game, 116-70 over visiting Point Park.
1989 – Adrian Townsend’s 17-foot jump shot with one second remaining caps a comeback by California University as the Vulcans defeat Indiana 73-71 at Hamer Hall. Cal trailed by 16 points in the first half and by five points with 1:13 left.
2013 – Ringgold overcomes an early 16-point deficit to beat Central Catholic 45-25 in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class AAA wrestling team tournament.

1936 _ Baseball elects its first class to the Hall of Fame. They are Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner.
1942 – Waynesburg High School’s wrestling team defeats Canonsburg, 23-17, the second loss for the Gunners in 109 meets. Waynesburg is the only team to defeat Canonsburg in nine years, having broken the Gunners’ 88-match winning streak two years earlier.
1958 – The St. Louis Cardinals give Donora’s Stan Musial a contract for $100,000, making him the highest paid player in the National League.
1963 – Rick Sonneborn of West Greene scores 63 points against Father Kolb Memorial (Masontown). Sonneborn makes 22 field goals and goes 20-for-22 at the free-throw line.
1963 – Eleven players and six officials are elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Among the players is former Washington & Jefferson College player and athletic director Wilbur “Pete” Henry. The other players are Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Bronco Nagurski, Sammy Baugh, Dutch Clark, Johnny McNally, Ernie Nevers, Mel Hein, Cal Hubbard and Don Hutson. The six officials are Bert Bell, Joe Carr, George Halas, Curly Lambeau, Tim Mara and George Preston.
1970 – Dave Clutter of Immaculate Conception High School sets a city basketball scoring record with 49 points but the Comets lose in overtime to visiting St. Elizabeth of Pleasant Hills, 95-94. Clutter scores 20 points in the third quarter.
1973 – Pat Mondock, an assistant at Washington & Jefferson College for three years, is promoted to head football coach.
1974 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select future Hall of Famers Lynn Swann (first round), Jack Lambert (second), John Stallworth (fourth) and Mike Webster (fifth) during the first day of the NFL draft. Many consider it the best draft in NFL history.
1993 – Dave Goodwin scores 32 points and Dan Bussey has five of his 14 in the second overtime as West Greene outlasts visiting Monessen 61-56.
1999 – Rich Tranquill scores 22 points in Avella’s 67-66 victory over Mapletown and breaks the school’s career scoring record. Tranquill finishes the night with 1,497 points to surpass Dave Wallace’s 1,480.
2010 – A fan brawl at halftime mars Washington’s 71-52 boys basketball victory at Monessen. After a 40-minute delay to break up the fight and clear the gymnasium, the second half is played in an empty gym.
2010 – Peters Township’s Craig Wolcott continues his torrid shooting by tossing in a career-high 40 points in the Indians’ 73-55 victory over Bethel Park. Wolcott makes his first 12 shots and finishes 13-for-15. He also makes 13 of 17 free throws.
2013 – Canon-McMillan overcomes a 20-point deficit in the second half and rallies to beat Trinity 76-75 in overtime. The Big Macs’ Seth Combs makes a three-point field goal with seven seconds left in regulation that forces overtime.
