J-M rolls through Valley

Jefferson-Morgan used five pins and three forfeits to come away with a 55-15 thumping of Valley in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class 2A Team Tournament Monday.

The win propels the Rockets against the No. 2-seeded Quaker Valley in Wednesday’s first round.

Rolling up pins for J-M (8-2) were Ronin Kramer (121), Deakyn DeHoet (139), Grant Hathaway (145), Levi Heath (215) and Landon Heath (Hvy).

Brendan Nuckles (127) and Jeremy Hughley.

Women’s basketball

Destiny Johnson converted a tiebreaking three-point play with 58 seconds remaining and Thiel went on to defeat Waynesburg 60-59 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Monday night.

Thiel (1-12, 3-15) jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter and had Waynesburg (2-11, 3-17) playing catch-up the rest of the way. The score was tied 54-54 when Johnson scored the go-ahead points for Thiel.

Waynesburg, trailing by three, had a chance to tie in the closing seconds but a Thiel foul sent the Yellow Jackets to the free-throw line with two seconds remaining. Waynesburg made both free throws to make it a one-point game.

Annika Dansby scored a game-high 20 points for the Jackets. She also had 11 rebounds and six steals. Marley Wolf and Clara Paige-Miller each scored 10 points. Emma Seto grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.

In the NFL

Kellen Moore is going from calling plays for Dak Prescott to Justin Herbert.

The Los Angeles Chargers didn’t waste any time in reaching an agreement with Moore to be their next offensive coordinator. Monday’s announcement came less than 24 hours after the Dallas Cowboys said Moore would not return.

Moore had spent the past eight seasons with the Cowboys, including the past four as offensive coordinator.

In baseball

The Royals and Zach Greinke have agreed to a contract for the coming season, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press on Monday, making it nine seasons over two stints in Kansas City for the six-time All-Star pitcher.

  • Longtime broadcaster Chip Caray is taking over as the television play-by-play voice of the St. Louis Cardinals, more than five decades after his grandfather and Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray became a baseball staple with the same club.

The voice of the Atlanta Braves is replacing Dan McLaughlin, who left the Cardinals booth in December after 24 years following his third arrest for drunken driving.

  • The Miami Marlins acquired reliever Matt Barnes in a trade with the Boston Red Sox.

Miami sent left-hander Richard Bleier to Boston for Barnes and cash considerations. The 32-year-old Barnes was designated for assignment when the Red Sox signed outfielder Adam Duvall last week.

In the NHL

The New York Islanders have acquired center Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks in the first blockbuster of NHL trade deadline season.

The Islanders sent forward Anthony Beauvillier, top prospect Aatu Raty and a top-12 protected first-round pick in the 2023 draft to the Canucks.

Horvat, 27, is a pending free agent and was one of the top rentals available ahead of the March 3 deadline. The former Canucks captain, who was chosen to represent them at the NHL All-Star Weekend, could give the Islanders the scoring boost they’ve needed. Horvat has already tied his career high with 31 goals this season.
