1966 – Rookie pitcher Woodie Fryman throws his third consecutive shutout — all on the road — as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Chicago Cubs, 6-0. Fryman gives up three hits, walks one and strikes out five.

1980 – Omar Moreno’s single off Dennis Lamp in the bottom of the 20th inning scores Ed Ott from second base and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Chicago Cubs, 4-3.

1991 – Twenty-eight horses are killed in a early morning barn fire at The Meadows racetrack.

1995 – The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Ron Francis wins two awards for the 1994-95 NHL season. Francis receives the Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward and is named winner of the Lady Byng Trophy as the NHL’s most gentlemanly player.

2002 – Daryle Ward becomes the first player in the history of PNC Park to hit a ball into the Allegheny River on the fly, helping the Astros rout the Pirates, 10-2.

2011 – South Fayette’s Christian Brumbaugh is named the Observer-Reporter’s Boys Athlete of the Year, and Peters Township’s Shelli Spamer the Girls Athlete of the Year. The state champion Peters Township girls soccer team is selected as the Team of the Year.
