1914 – Honus Wagner becomes the first player in modern baseball to get 3,000 hits.

1941 – Trinity, under head coach Donald “Dudey” Moore, repeats as WPIAL baseball champion, defeating Penn Township, 3-1, in the title game at Forbes Field. Winning pitcher Billy Sams strikes out 11 and tosses a five-hitter.

1946 – The New York Giants’ Mel Ott becomes the first manager to be ejected in both ends of a doubleheader. The Pittsburgh Pirates win both games, 2-1 and 5-1.

1973 – Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, wins the Belmont Stakes in record time to capture the Triple Crown. Secretariat sets a world record on the 1 1/2-mile course with a time of 2:24, and a record for largest margin of victory in the Belmont, 31 lengths.

1974 – Willie Stargell hits two home runs, including a grand slam, and Richie Zisk hits for the cyle and drives in five runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates rout the San Francisco Giants, 14-1, at Candlestick Park.

1981 – Sam Perry’s two-out bases-loaded single caps a three-run bottom of the ninth inning and gives Mon Valley Catholic a 4-3 win over Northwestern in the first round of the PIAA Class AA baseball playoffs at Ainsworth Field in Erie.

1984 – The Pittsburgh Penguins draft Mario Lemieux, Doug Bodger and Doug Shedden in the first round of the NHL entry draft, marking the only time in club history that it selected three players in the first round.

1996 – Tom Weiskopf sets a tournament record with an 11-under-par 205 and wins the fourth Pittsburgh Senior Classic by three strokes at Quicksilver Golf Course.

2005 – Chartiers-Houston turns a double play, with the outs coming at home plate and second base, to end the game and secure a 2-1 victory over Smethport in the PIAA Class A softball quarterfinals at Clarion University.

2008 – Canon-McMillan scores 12 runs over the final two innings and Matt Pierpont pitches a four-hitter as the Big Macs roll over Central Mountain 14-0 in the PIAA Class AAAA baseball playoffs at Brockway High School.

2008 – Carmichaels scores four runs in the first inning and Chuck Gasti strikes out 11 in relief of injured Joby Lapkowicz as the Mikes defeat Serra Catholic 6-2 in the PIAA Class A baseball semifinals at Consol Energy Park.

2011 – Chalese Wilson’s slap-bunt double through the infield breaks a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning and sends Chartiers-Houston to a 2-1 victory over Fannett-Metal in the PIAA Class A softball quarterfinals at Mt. Aloysius College.
