1968 – Pittsburgh’s Bob Moose pitches a two-hit shutout, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning, as the Pirates blank the Houston Astros, 3-0, at Forbes Field. Moose pitches 7 2/3 hitless innings before Julio Gotay singles in the eighth.

1978 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade defenseman Dave Burrows to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Randy Carlyle and forward George Ferguson.

1982 – The Pittsburgh Pirates acquire third baseman Jim Morrison from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for pitcher Eddie Solomon.

1988 – The Pittsburgh Penguins fire coach Pierre Creamer after one season. Creamer guided the Penguins to a 36-35-9 record – their best in nine years – but they fail to make the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season.

1999 – Sophomore Lee Fritz drives in seven runs, including two in Waynesburg’s five-run top of the ninth inning, as the Raiders pull out a 15-10 victory over Brownsville in the PIAA Class AA baseball semifinals before 1,352 at the Beth-Center stadium.

1999 – Sophomore Eric Riggle fires a one-hitter as Chartiers-Houston blanks defending state champion Carmichaels in the PIAA softball semifinals at California University.

2005 – Asafa Powell breaks the world record in the 100 meters with a 9.77 clocking at Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece. Powell shaves one hundredth of a second off Tim Montgomery’s record of 9.78 set in Paris in 2002.

2007 – Sidney Crosby skates away with the Hart Trophy, becoming the NHL’s youngest MVP since Wayne Gretzky. The 19-year-old Pittsburgh captain gets 91 first-place votes and 1,225 points in a poll of Professional Hockey Writers’ Association members.

2011 – The New York Yankees purchase the contract of lefthanded pitcher Vidal Nuno from the Washington Wild Things. Nuno will go on to become the first former Wild Things player to appear in a major league game.

2013 – Shortstop Linda Rush clubs a two-run homer in the top of the 12th inning and winning pitcher Alayna Astuto strikes out 18 and allows only four hits as Canon-McMillan defeats Neshaminy 4-3 to win the PIAA Class AAAA softball championship.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Vernon Silbaugh had a hole-in-one May 16 at Chippewa Golf Club. Silbugh aced the 185-yard No. 3 hole by using a 5-wood. His playing partners were Bob Price and Joe Foriska.
