1916 – Tom Hughes of the Boston Braves pitched a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh Pirates.

1941 – The Cincinnati Reds sign former Trinity High School pitcher Billy Sams and assign him to their farm club in Tuscon, Ariz., which plays in the Class C Arizona-Texas League.

1975 – The Milwakee Bucks trade three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Kareen Abdul-Jabbar to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Elmore Smith, Brian Winters and two draft picks, Dave Myers and Junior Bridgeman.

1985 – The Pittsburgh Penguins acquire Joey Mullen from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a second-round draft pick, and select center Craig Simpson with their first-round pick in the NHL Entry Draft.
