1954 – Ed Hepe is hired as basketball coach at McDonald High School.
1962 – Jack Nicklaus beats Arnold Palmer by three strokes in a playoff to win the U.S. Open.
1965 – Undefeated Bret Hanover paces to a track record of 1:57 2/5 to beat 10 other 3-year-olds to win the Hanover-Hempt Stake at The Meadows. Bret Hanover’s record improves to 29-0.
1973 – Johnnie Miller shoots a 63 in the final round to win the U.S. Open by one stroke over John Schlee at Oakmont. Miller’s 8-under 63 is the first ever carded in a major championship.
1976 – The 18-team NBA absorbs four of the six remaining ABA teams: the New York Nets, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets.
2008 – Tiger Woods wins his 14th major championship by defeating Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole playoff for the U.S. Open title in San Diego.

1941 – Joe Louis knocks out Billy Conn in the 13th round at the Polo Grounds in New York to retain the world heavyweight boxing title.
1960 – Arnold Palmer beats amateur Jack Nicklaus by two strokes to win the U.S. Open.
1965 – On the opening night of the third season of harness racing at The Meadows, Bret Hanover sets a track record of 1:57.4 to win the Hanover-Hempt Stake before a crowd of 11,000.
1967 – Jack Nicklaus shoots a record 275 to beat Arnold Palmer and win the U.S. Open.
